  • The $20 trick didn't work for me!!!

Tried it at the Luxor at about 5.30pm. Had a standard pyramid room booked and that's what I got(on the 2nd floor as well). I'm pretty sure the check-in girl was too moody to offer us anything (even a higher pyramid room) despite the fact she definately clocked the $20 that I had between the credit card and ID. I simply took the $20 back before I handed the ID over to her though.

I know someone else who tried it with a male check in clerk about an hour later with success so it just depends!!

Always worth a try I think though. :)

What do you say to the check-in person when you're doing the $20 trick?

There are various ways to go about it.

Some people say 'i'm on my honeymoon/it's our anniversery etc...do you have any complimentary upgrades available?'.

Others just say 'do you have any complimentary upgrades you can offer?'.

Some reckon asking for a specific upgrade is a good idea (which is what I did, but mostly because MrIttels particularly wanted to stay in the pyramid and the most likely upgrade they offer is to a tower room).

it,s like check in staff at airports.

i sometimes think they adopt a moody attitude just to avoid being hassled for upgrades.

glad you had a good time by the way.

If your going first time, I'd suggest staying around "The cross-roads of the world" area. This is Tropicana/Las Vegas Blvd cross section.
Hotels to stay in? The good thing about Vegas is that money rules!!
How much do you want to spend?? It's all down to that!
If you want one of the best hotels going - THEhotel at Mandalay Bay or Wynn. The Signature at MGM comes in a very close 3rd!!

The Mandalay Bay is poorly located, but there are two good hotels there (with the Four Seasons). The Signature is more of a serviced apartment-type joint, I would avoid the MGM generally.

The Bellagio is a very nice hotel, feels very new, and high-quality in all areas. Caesars Palace doesn't even begin to measure up to it - there are refurbished rooms, but then there are ancient ones, one restaurant might be nice, but then the café is horrid and tiny.

For best rates try https://www.biddingfortravel.com and https://www.travelaxe.com.

Virgin has very good rates too, often beating any direct seller:

My policies are based not on some economics theory, but on things I and millions like me were brought up with: an honest day's work for an honest day's pay; live within your means; put by a nest egg for a rainy day; pay your bills on time; support the police - Margaret Thatcher.
