Well they must have been under else the garage would have told you.the guy just said "yeh its about due" when i asked if it was legal. He didnt puff his cheeks out and say it was awful.
My front tyres are "about due". They're still legal though. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying. Am I being thick? It is possible. :rotfl:
Yeah after being stopped he got a new tyre. I'm sure the garage would have told me whether the one the police saw was legal or not.0 -

Well, he said "they're about due". I reckon that means anything from about 3mm to 1mm. He might not have been told he was getting it changed because he'd been stopped.
If it was me, I'd have kept hold of the tyre and had it VERY carefully checked. I've no problem if it's been measured correctly, but if it hasn't, you need to be able to defend your position.
In fact, as it was only today, I'd be going back to the tyre company to try and find it.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I have been stopped today and had a tyre under the legal limit (the others were brand new on MOT 8 weeks ago, so i was suprised by this). I have received a ticket for this and I understand that it will involve points on my licence. I already have 9 points unfortunately, for minor speeding violations (37 in a 30 kind of thing). I really need my licence for my job. What do you good people suggest? I am really looking for serious advice, please spare me the "shouldn't have had a bald tyre" lectures.
After you were stopped and the tyre was pointed out, did they officers allow you to continue driving the vehicle? If they did then you have some kind of defence, however as others have pointed out, less than 3mm of tread is a bit w4nk to be driving on! The insurance premiums maybe enough to waken you to grow up and shut up :eek:0 -

And how would he prove it was his?0 -

But that's not the point, is it? The legal limit for his vehicle is 1.6mm. Anything under that and an offence is committed. Anything equal to or over and all is well.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

You can have 1mm of tread on the outer edge. 75% across the centre of the tyre must be 1.6mm or above.0 -

Well, I didn't say it would necessarily be easy. But, depending on where he took it, the tyre fitter may not have had a busy day, he may remember where he put it, what make it was etc. The op may be able to remember the make - it might be the only one of that make changed today.
If he's done his job properly, the officer will have noted the serial number of the tyre. If it goes to court, this should be noted in his statement, so the OP could double check.
Nothing ventured...If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
