Well, I have just made my best white loaf yet in my MR, it's this model

    t_16314.jpg

If anyone is having trouble getting a decent white loaf out of this model then try this recipe, I have just found it in a library book (glad my 11 year old wanted to go to the library yesterday now).

This is for a 1½ lb loaf.

    9 fl oz water

    1oz butter (at room temp)

    1 teaspoon salt

15 oz strong white bread flour

    2 teaspoons caster sugar

    1¼ teaspoons fast action yeast

Use setting number 1 white setting, 1½ lb loaf, light crust

It does say for a richer crust to add 2 tablespoons of dried milk powder along with the sugar but I didn't bother with that.

It came out square compared to the rounded top ones I normally get, looks more like a normal loaf when sliced.

We have just tried it and it tastes great, this is def a keeper recipe.

    ;)

Did you use the MR measuring spoons for the tea and table spoon amounts or a regular spoon? I have the older version machine I think (the black & silver one where the top opens)

    Hi Everyone :D

Can I please join? I was freecycled a MR Fastbake today so am planning on waking up to my first attempt ;) I have only ever owned a cheapie Lidl breadmaker before which I used for years (made lovely bread for a 20 Euro machine) but that died a couple of years ago. I was put off buying one before because of the cost but the one I have been given looks brilliant, far more advanced than the last one.

Well, I used the recipe I normally use for handbaking and it was gorgeous. What a way to start the morning, warm fresh bread with lashings of butter nom nom nom...:D It seemed to rise much better in the machine, I think maybe I didn't leave it long enough when I hand baked it :o

I have the older model and find that setting 2 (large loaf 1 1/2 lb) white comes out well. I always use 2 1/2 tablespoons of skimmed milk powder and this seems to help with the crust. I use the MR measuring spoons.
    .
I have also found that I do not seem to have enough headroom in the machine for a 2lb loaf. It does seem to be a bit trial and error.

The best loaf I seem to make is a large loaf using 2 cups of white flour and 1 cup of soft grain flour, cooked on the large white loaf soft crust setting.

I have a Morphy Richards breadmaker, model 48268. It takes a bit of trial and error, but I finally have a recipe that makes a good long loaf. I use my TALA measuring cup.

I use 1 1/2 cups warm water, then add 2 tbsp oil, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp salt, then 2 cups white bread flour, 2 cups wholemeal bread flour and finally 1 tsp yeast. I often add 1/2 cup or so of wheatbran, and sometimes some poppy and/or sunflower seeds.

I put it on setting 1 for full period of time - it doesn't often let me down.

I have just made the banana and walnut cake from the recipe book as I don't have an oven at the moment - it seemed a bit 'bouncy' to be a cake, definately felt more like a bread.

I use proper measuring spoons, I think I bought them from Tesco.

I didn't get any cups/measuring spoons with mine as it was a freebie. I have just been using my normal cups and spoons. I am finding tht the dough is a bit heavy though, I have tried adding milk powder but it doesn't seem to make any difference - I am making white loaves by the way. Any advice gratefully received.

I use my tala measuring cup, which I got half price in Sainsbury's a few months ago - it is very easy to use - ensure you are using 'american' cup size rather than british cup - there is quite a bit of difference. I then use a set of measuring spoons for tbsp & tsp.

I'm sure that you would be able to find the weight equivalent online - I think someone said that it is in the Delia cookbook too.
