both lanes 1 & 2 prior to crossing the junction are straight on and have 2 lanes after the junction, it is the fact that lane 1 should be the merging lane for reasons I have explained at great lengths.

"Should" that means even you believe that it doesn't, and that lane 2 merges with lane 1 as indicated by the arrows.

derick is correct as well, common sense suggests that if the rhs lane has the cleaniest straight route thus the lhs should really merge with rhs.

Im beginning to think this is less about the reality of the incident and more about kicking the guy with the camera.

Out of curiosity did ya'll create a road block to stop the Google car coming down your street?
Would you have if you you'd known?
Did you get your house deleted from Google street view?

The right to photography from public places still stands and if you don't like it, tough..... Next time you do something stupid, remember someone might be watching.

But in this instance the road is arrow straight, and the arrows indicate for the right lane to merge with the left -

The arrow on the road is pointing the wrong way, when this was done a few years ago I contacted the Highways dept, and informed them they had it wrong, they would not be convinced, I then contacted the traffic police and spoke to a sergeant who told me that they had also contacted the Highways and informed them they had it wrong, but still they would not listed and the police had no power to make them change it.

Ironically about one and a half miles away on the opposite side of the road a similar occurrence happens, i.e. lane 1 ends, but this time the arrow points the correct way, i.e from lane 1 to lane 2.

Also don't forget arrows on the road are advisory, you also need to look at the road layout, and in this case the arrows point the wrong way!.

in this instance the straighter road is the rhs lane, thus the lhs lane should be merging with the rhs.

It sounds that you, like derrick have no common sense if you believe that. I expect that you are one of these pathetic drivers who take the most direct route across islands, with no regard for lane discipline and the road markings.

^^ You have to admit that with the left hand lane having a left turn option, the right hand lane is the unhindered primary lane. This is what I think Derrick is getting at......

The left hand lane would potentially get held up by traffic waiting at the lights to turn left, so I can see why people would use the right hand lane as the primary.
