hey charity girl welcome to the pack ...hopefully we'll all find this course intersting and knowledgeable..i got onto chapter two today and read the bit about students over the age of 30 gaining a degree ..coupled with a visit from the uni i have been given a guaranteed placement at and i'm thinking ...WHAT AM I DOING....so already this course is giving me food for thought ...anyone else found anything interesting yet ..(or got your pack through even)
  • ooooooh it sounds great. I'm doing the course to get back into studying (left uni 2 1/2 years ago, and would eventually like to complete another degree either bachelors or masters) and also because I am coming up to some big finance decisions soon - looking for my first house to buy after christmas, have been paying into a pension for 2 years, don't really understand its context, plus think the way they will link these ideas to society and government will be really interesting!!

    Thanks for the welcome!

  • Mountainofdebt i'm not far from Llantrisant. You?

I'm about 20 miles north of Cardiff so not far from you at all.

Are you going to the tutoral on monday?

I've read chapter one (not a swot, trying to get ahead as I've a baby due halway thru the course!) and I think you'll find this very interesting as it talks exclusively about how your finances affect the wider context of the country's economics and vica versa.

    Hello Everybody

I graduated with a BSc from the OU last year. For me a great personal achievement. Anyway funding the course need not be that tricky. The best place to go for advice is the OU either the web site or telephone/visit a regional centre. The people are all very nice and helpful and will do everything possible to sign you up (more students = more funding). The OU has other benefits such as a great on-line community very much like MSE and the learning structure is very flexible. However I would advise people to think carefully before settling on the OU for the following reasons. It takes tremendous dedication to home study, you need to allow at least 14 hrs per week and be extremely dedicated and selfish. Home study can be a very lonely experience, e-mail and telephones are just not the same as face to face contact, not everybody can cope/deal with the remoteness and isolation. First year students usually have tutorials (if there is any) on a weekly basis. After that they are usually monthly and thats when you really miss the face to face contact.
Lastly if you are paying for the course yourself the OU is the cheapest way to get a degree (OU degrees are highly valued in the workplace, proves dedication). My five years of study cost me roughly £2800.

Blimey - thought I was doing OK having worked through the study guide and just getting into Chapter One. Enjoying it already, and highly relevant in my work outside.DVD rom is fun too (if a little depressing - how much do I need to put into a pension!!!!!).

I have a tutorial tomorrow night, although I thinks it's just admin bits and bobs to begin with. Only pain is its in Crawley, whereas I live in Worthing. And I'm in London early tomorrow morning so will be a long day. Never mind.

    Good luck to everyone else.
