The only tips I will give my postie is to set his alarm earlier so he can deliver my mail before 2pm each day and to stop walking across my lawn and crushing plants.

Oh dear...I feel a bit mean now! I only tip our binmen and postie £2 or £3: I assumed quite a few people on the round would be tipping, so it'd all mount up to a nice amount. Not sure if I should bother now as I don't want to offend them with a low amount, but would miss £5 or £10 :o
  • My husbands a postman and has been most of his working life. He loves the job and never makes a fuss about the weather. I think tipping the postie is a dying tradition.
The post office have introduced so many changes including cutting rounds out and adding them to others. They also 'lapse' certain roads so when they have finished their own round they take out a part of the roads which are lapsed hence the reason the post is delivered later and some roads don't have a regular postman. Not the posties fault but as the face of the post office they can get the blame.
I will not be tipping the postie this year as I am on a 'lapsed' road and never have the same person. That said when I have had a regular postie I have always tipped as they have been so good and brought my mail in all weathers and with a smile and a chat.
My husband never expects any tips but is very grateful for anything - chocolates a couple of pound or £20 - he always sends them a christmas card to say thank you too.

I always tip the postmas £5. Never usually tip the binmen as tbh they aren't too great here and always leave the place a right mess with dragging bags . Window Cleaner gets tipped everytime he supposedly cleans the windows. Always tip home shopping delivery drivers as know they are on pretty minimum wages and usually tip deliveries that are bulk loads. All adds up though between that and putting money in charity buckets whilst out shopping

I'm now in two minds about whether to tip my postie (I usually only have one - a lovely lady but occassionally it's someone else) as I don't want to leave her a tip and find someone else has done her round that day and she's not got it!
And I also have a thing about tips anyway... As others have said, I don't get tipped for doing my job... but I DO want to let some of them know that the work they do is very much appreciated when they do a good job... because a little kindness never goes amiss!
How does the postie spouses and posties etc feel about home made treats? I'm thinking cookies here :) Would they get eaten or in this day and age are they treated with suspicion and chucken? Obviously I don't want to make a lot of effort and bake cookies only to have them thrown away! Maybe I should just buy them a box of chocs *sigh*

Really wish I had some of the posties mentioned on here - mine is awful! It's not uncommon for me to get no post all week and then a big pile on Friday as they can't be bothered coming down here every day, any cards are nearly always opened, plus we live in a block of flats and if no one answers the buzzer straight away he holds them down until someone does - which at weekend when I'm hoping for a lie in is really annoying to have to get up to let him in, only to find he doesn't even have any post for me my buzzer was just near the top!! Needless to say will not be getting a tip.

You took the words right out of my mouth! My dad has been a postman all my life and my partner he has been a postman for 7 years. For the first 4 years of his job he covered days off. So he was never on the same duty so never got a tip. Now he has his own duty and he appericates any tip whether its money, beer or a lovely homemade cake. He does his job well and hasnt been impressed by many changes royal mail has made but it's his job and he just has to get on with it. He never expects a Christmas tip but it is lovely when he does get one. He never wastes the money he always saves it up and spends it on our two boys. He is a golly postman who wears short all year round and wistles all the time so he isnt a postman to miss!

thts right, thats the reason for mail delivery getting later.........smiley-rolleyes007.gif
  • Well perhaps if you tipped he/she may not walk across your lawn

Maybe the reason they do is they have such little time to get round anyway

Does it matter what time your mail comes as long as it does come. Really you have no right to expect mail to come at your beck and call

Have a happy humbug xmas ;)

    Bah humbug
