black-saturn wrote:The Marriott we stayed in was next to the Hilton. Yes we did go to the bay. It was OK as long as you intend to eat out. Nothing much else to do there. Then we got a boat back up the river to the city centre and saw all the rubbish piled up the sides of the river and someone taking drugs under a bridge. How romantic.
The whole point about not being able to make a decision about what a place is really like in one weekend is stupid. A place which wants to be a tourist attraction should grab the attention their visitors in one weekend so much they want to stay longer and come back. Not be itching to get out of the place and be made to feel alienated. It's like they think they have their own little world there that no one can touch with their own little language (which I heard no one using) but they don't really.
Marriott next to the Hilton? Where exactly?0 -

Mainly because the Marriott is a good 10 mins walk from the Hilton, which is close to the castle, whereas the Marriott is some way south of there.
As for the rest of your comments..... I am really sorry to read that you had a bad time in Cardiff. I've worked there for over 20 years, and have lived within 10 miles for much longer, and have NEVER EVER been offered drugs there. I have no doubt that there's a fair bit of trading in certain parts of town, but I have no idea where outside of the roughest areas, which no tourists would ever visit (or want to). Yes, parts of the city are grubby and litter strewn - isn't every city in this country? - especially on weekends, but it really has a lot going for it.
I've seen the T-shirts you describe, but only on sale from street sellers on match days. In Cardiff and in London and Birmingham and Manchester. For Wales and England substitute ManU and Liverpool or Villa and Birmingham. They are tastless junk - please don't think they represent what most people here think, just as most Liverpool people wouldn't dream of making sick comments about the Munich air crash as some Liverpool fans do. I've seen some nutters wearing the shirts on match days, just as I've seen some English people wearing BNP racist T-shirts, but that doesn't mean I think all English people are racist.
My brother in law helped build the stadium - he's Welsh born and bred and a builder by trade. He's not Irish.
You do hear Welsh in Cardiff, but not everywhere obviously. My wife and children are fluent Welsh speakers and use the language for around 7 hours a a day every day of their lives. Does the fact that you didn't hear it being spoken make it a little language?0 -
I was born and bred in Cardiff, and although I now work in London during the week (still for the Welsh Government though) I have a home just outside Wales.
I owned and lived in a house not far from the city centre (Grangetown) for 8 years and have never, ever been offered drugs or seen them being sold. And before you ask, I used to walk home from town in the early hours of the morning through plenty of places where such activity was allegedly going on.
My parents are English, my husband is English and I do speak welsh.
Frankly Black Saturn, if you never return to Cardiff again it will be your loss, not ours.
Claire
