I remember working for Jessops, and a memo coming around asking for a vote on opening Christmas Day. Unsurprisingly, it didn't hold....

Also remember working for a mechanics and leaving the shop early Christmas Day afternoon- we'd had a week of customers leaving alcohol, mince pies and gifts in to us, and had a party on Christmas Eve. Very nice boss at the time even paid us for a half day!

:( It seems Asda workers will not be having a very merry Christmas or New Year as some stores will only be shut 1 day - Christmas Day.
Previous years stores have been closed Boxing Day and New Years Day but staff morale has hit rock bottom this year, with stores staying open later on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve until 7pm this year as well to rub salt into the wound ! The company also does not recognise the Bank Holiday Mon/Tues designated by the state for Xmas/New Year falling at the weekend, Scrooge would be proud of the way the Wal-Mart owned company is treating its staff at their busiest and most stressful time of year !!
So much for the government banging on about making the Uk more family friendly ??

There are a lot of places that make people work on Christmas day. My husband works for a pub chain and as part of his job he is working Christmas eve until 2am (guess I'm playing Santa for the kids :D), boxing day until 2am and some of his co-workers are also working Christmas day but it's all part and parcel of the job.
There are pleanty of people who expect to be waited on hand and foot christmas day because they don't want to cook and want the day off and don't care about the poor sods doing it (Oh but they get paid well, yeah right!!!). Is it fair, no not on the families left sat home alone especially the ones with children but you know going into these jobs that shops, pubs, etc open on bank holidays and christmas time if you cannot accept that do not take the job.

I work for a bank and all staff (customer facing and behind the scenes) have to work normal hours on Christmas and New Years Eve (so until 5-5.30pm) for no extra pay.

Collections staff also have to work New Years day.

If you don't like it, do the only thing that consumers can do... vote with your feet. Don't shop in Asda. Shop someone nice instead.

Don't blame the shops, blame the customers. I worked in a shop for 3 years. Christmas eve 2008, we had people giving off that we would be closed on Boxing Day, they would take their custom somewhere that wanted them, etc. Roll on Christmas eve 2009, we had people giving off that we were opening on Boxing Day, for the same reasons as in OP. Admirable, until I was working on boxing day morning, and served most of them again within the first hour!
I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!

have to agree with the above,as it is the consumer who drives the market.
if we all decided not to shop on these bank holidays they would soon change their opening days.so why not relax on these days and let these employees have quality time off to spend time with their families, after all christmas etc is for everone

Close all shops on Sundays and every Bank Holiday unless they are truly needed like chemists or true family run shops.
