Can I ask who's told you this as our manager has told us both days are classed as bank holidays.

But then again someone started the same rumour last year and got everyone up in arms, when it wasn't true!

The staff handbook states this in black and white plus local store Management have been told this will be the case this Christmas/New Year.

Don't the staff have annual leave?

They could book any time they wanted off over christmas well in advance.

At my workplace, we have to give up 3 days of our annual leave for the christmas break, because the office shuts.

:( The staff are not permitted to take annual leave over Christmas / New Year.

I am not allowed to take time off in January in my job, because that is our busiest time of year.

The thing is staff know these terms when they take the job on, so there is no point complaining about them.
  • Tesco is very similar - my contracted hours include Saturdays, so i have to make those hours up on the Monday prior to Christmas day. We are only shut Christmas Day and the Tuesday (28th) is not a bank holiday as far as they are concerned xx

  • My Dad works for the police & has to work Christmas Day & Boxing Day. My husband works for Network Rail, same applies. They dont moan though. They get on with it because its the job they signed up to do. If you dont like it, leave.

Yes I agree, fine if the job required you to work these days when you joined but if they change the game and expect you to like it :rotfl: that is very different. Do people really intend to do a weeks food shop on Boxing Day ??

Perhaps not, but if their sale has started, I might go and stock up on chocolates and Christmas cake and whatnot.

I would like to say at this point that I don't know any ASDA staff that are moaning about it ( well not really) as they have all had their xmas rota for quite a while and it was clear back in the begining of the year that the store would be open bank hoildays etc.

I am sure that the £300 given because the pay rise was messed up helped as well...........lol

Yes some people might! A lot of people will be working Xmas eve/day and over the next week so may want to do their Sunday shop as usual.
I think unless everything shuts down completely and people are happy that the trains/buses/routine health services etc etc will not be available then it may seem sensible to keep the shops/supermarkets closed also!
