Aldi is so expensive - am I missing something?

  • I don't know how some people are saying that Aldi is more expensive than other supermarkets........you just need to remove yourself from the mindset of comparing the prices with branded or value items. The quality is superior in Aldi and cannot be compared with unbranded value items from Tesco etc as it is of a far greater quality. You cannot compare apples with pears, to use an analogy. Just have confidence in trying some of the products.

I for example, no longer use Clinique lipstick at £13 but use Aldi brand lipstick @ £1.99 - not because I need to save money but because there is no real difference between the products and therefore I can't justify buying Clinique- it is just a case of trying different items!
  • It wasn't until I tasted some of the stuff from both Aldi and Lidl that I understood the value for money. My tastebuds and Asda don't get on :)
  • I'm another weirdo who has no B&M or Home Bargain, nearby,

I'm with Candy on this one  I really would be lost without Home Bargains now. For those who aren't familiar

I do prefer my veg & fruit from Lidl at the moment & they have had good offers on meat recently too.

Purplebutterfly, your local B& M's is special as it was the very first one opened!! To be fair, your Tesco is only a very small one though.
Now thanks to Tommix & Queen Bear, now Lady Westy of Woodpecker :)

purplebutterfly i think the problem is you are spolied for choice plus are being a savvy shopper and already shopping around for the best deals and bargains. aldi isn't marketed as a budget store it is marketed as an equivalent to supermarkets finest brands etc therefore the quality of the products should be very good at a lower price.

I totaly agree with purplebutterfly and have always found Aldi to be more expensive--the only bargains i ever find is with their weekly fruit n veg specials, and dog food trays..
...last year The Sun newspaper did a weekly shopping basket challenge for basic items such as bread/eggs/sugar/flour/rice/milk,and cant remember what else..Aldi was persistently 9th most expensive out of 10...being beaten only by Waitrose!
    Slimming World..Wk1,..STS,..Wk2,..-2LB,..Wk3,..-3.5lb,..Wk4,..-2.5,..Wk5,..-1/2lb,Wk6,..STS,..Wk7,..-1lb.

We actually walked around the whole store 4 times trying to spot the "bargains" and "great value" items that are often written about in the press.............sadly we found none and the final total for our trolley of goods was over twice as much as the same trolley at Tesco.

Really? I'm not being facetious. I'm really surprised that it cost more than double. Why did you buy a trolley worth of groceries when you could see it was so much more expensive? I would've just left and went somewhere else.

Hi, Just wanted to add, I know this is Food Shopping, but I can recommend the gifts and tools in Aldi.

I could never leave a full trolley and walk away, I don't think that's fair on the staff - and I didn't want to put it all back myself!

Plus, I was really curious to actually taste the food. Imagine if I'd abandoned my haul, only to later discover I had missed out on ambrosia of the gods! :rotfl:
