Aldi is so expensive - am I missing something?

Well, to update, I think it is definitely a case of picking certain items from Aldi and then doing my main shop for basics elsewhere.
Hubby says the chorizo is wonderful (I don't eat it so wouldn't know!) and he also loved their mince pies. I thought the mince pies were really nice but the standout item for me was the luxury Xmas pudding at £3.99. Far and away the nicest, softest, fluffiest xmas pud I've ever had and full of huge delicious almonds. Absolutely gorgeous. Also gorgeous and reasonably priced is their own brand extra thick brandy cream.
Sadly, the bread was not really up to much and I am really disappointed that our store still has such a limited selection of deli-style meats and cheeses.
I'm hoping to be able to get some serrano ham/proscuitto etc to try and I think I will give their turkey/chicken/duck three bird roast a try as well.
So, to sum up, whilst I certainly don't find Aldi cheap overall, I will definitely buy selected items from there because the quality provides better value for money.Living with Lupus is like juggling with butterflies0 -

Do you think that Lidl is cheaper then aldi?0 -
No, they're about the same. I more or less stopped shopping in Lidl when the other supermarkets brought their prices down. Still buy some things from there like whole corn on the cob still in their leaves - hugely cheaper than elsewhere - but the majority of Lidl goods i would say are the same as Aldi. Even toilet paper, which used to be a bargain from lidl, I now buy at Home Bargains.Living with Lupus is like juggling with butterflies0

I only pop into aldi now when the super six are things that I will use. It is good this week if you are looking for xmas veg.0

I like aldi but never do a full shop there because I prefer to buy most of my meat elsewhere. Also they don't stock a great selectionof frozen vegetables. Their frozen seafood selection is fab though and very good value.
I popped in today and they had a full range of deli meats (serrano ham/proscuitto etc) as well as other cold cuts, there always seems to be a fairly good selection. The salami is delish from there and tastes much better than the supermarket standard equiv and much more on par with the finest/extra special selections.
The low fat natural yogurt is price matched to asda/tesco's value yogurt at 44p but it tastes much nicer and is thicker than the supermarket value stuff, their greek style yogurt is also cheaper than supermarket at 78p.
The vegetables are always good value, the prices do vary from week to week so I shop for the bargains and anything that seems to have had a price spike I leave it to see if I can pick it up cheaper elsewhere.
Their smoked salmon is superb value at £2.79 per pack and again good quality.
Other things we buy include tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, bratwurst sausages...
very happy aldi customer here*wonders when they will make dressing gowns acceptable day wear?*No new toiletries challenge - use up the stash first!NSD Jan 2/150 -
I shop quite a lot at Lidl and find it really cheap, i did shop at Sainsbury's until a few months ago and my food bills have halved as I now only buy a few items there. The advantage is that Lidl is in the town where I live whereas Sainsbury and Aldi are about 10 miles away
I like Aldi but don't find it very cheap but the stuff is good quality, i do buy frozen tuna from Aldi as it is about £4 for 4 pieces and pick up a few bits and pieces when I go there.0 -
What about the 69p veg/fruit items these must be cheaper than Mr T as veg costs a fortune there!!!
Also some of the beer is £1 Marstons I think and they do an ok merlot for £2.99. Also gammon joints a fiver and 4 pints of mile a pound!!
:eek::eek::eek:
We actually walked around the whole store 4 times trying to spot the "bargains" and "great value" items that are often written about in the press.............sadly we found none and the final total for our trolley of goods was over twice as much as the same trolley at Tesco.
Am I missing something? The only good value I really spotted was a whole frozen goose for £12 but that is not exactly an everyday essential - unlike the massively overpriced cereal.
I admit that we are spoiled having Tesco, Home Bargains and B&M all within a four minute walk of each other; so maybe I have got used to real bargain basement prices for my groceries. But I'm really struggling to see where Aldi beats the other supermarkets on price at all.
What am I doing wrong?
ETA - within a 15 minute walk we have Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Morrisons, Home Bargains, 4 butchers, 3 fruit and veg shops, 7 bakeries and a B&M Bargains, so that might account for low prices as they all attempt to undercut each other. Most of them can see each other out of the window too![/QUOTE]0 -
Our nearest Aldi is about 100 miles away (40 mile ferry journey and 60 miles on the road) So when I get the chance to go, I stock up on their cooked meats which are great quality and so much cheaper than the big 4 supermarkets. They all have decent dates and last for a while when we get home.
I wouldn't do a full shop there, but it's lovely to have a choice for a change.0 -
Never heard of B&M or Home Bargains - not in our neck of the woods it seems.0
