Aldi is so expensive - am I missing something?

I am quite suprised about nobody mentioning Farmfoods for their 2 Hovis loaves for £1.50. I don't eat a lot of bread, but my friend and I share a £1.50 offer.0

I'd never heard of these stores either. I'm in East Kent, & having just done a search, have found my nearest store is in Essex.:rotfl:
I'm in Surrey, I have no idea where those shops are.0 -
I've never heard of B&M either!
I agree with OP to a degree, i've always found Aldi to be a let-down price-wise, not comparable to Asda or Tesco for everyday items but they have an occasional bargain but it's not worth driving to an Aldi just to save 50p on a joint or whatever else is "on offer".
Lidl is slightly better, but not as convenient for me.
The other problem is the Aldi & Lidl stores always seem to be too small & therefore only a selected range of items, perhaps we are spoilt having a warehouse sized Tesco & Asda and a huge Sainsburys within driving range.
I agree, they only do bits & pieces, you can't get everything in there.0 -
I'm another weirdo who has no B&M, Home Bargain, Lidl or Netto store nearby, nor do I have an M&S food store or a Morrisons.
All we have is Tesco, Sainsbury (which has no car park so doesn't count, in my opinion), Waitrose and a Farmfoods (which is great if you know your prices and for odds and ends but not for a whole shop) in one direction, or ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury or Waitrose in the other.....

I spent £20 is aldi last week and just out of interest compared my basket to asda prices - would have cost me £28..don't care how much it would have cost in tesco as I hate it! yes somethings are cheaper in B&M and HB but you never know what you'll get so can't plan shoppingPeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

My B&M and the Home Bargains are medium sized stores but they always have the same range of groceries. Not always the same brand but if I want eggs, tinned fish, rice, pasta, cous cous, soup, pasta, crisps, pop, biscuits, cereal, bread etc etc (basically just every day storecupboard items) there is always loads of choice.
They've both been selling Lancashire tea at 99p a box since it was launched in the shops - which is great for me as that's what I love. But they both always have Tetley, PG Tips, Nescafe Coffee etc.
Only thing that B&M does tend to chop and change frequently are their pre-packed meats such as ham and bacon.
All my other meat I get from the butcher though.Living with Lupus is like juggling with butterflies0 -
(I seem to recall counting 50 or more different cheese products).
Whoa! I think I counted 10 different types of cheese and 3 of them were camembert! Very, very limited choice of deli-style meats - most of that counter was taken up with pre-packaged microwaveable hot dogs in rolls and burgers in buns.
It must just depend where you live as to whether the stores stock a good range or not.Living with Lupus is like juggling with butterflies0 -
I think it depends on what your going into aldi for.
For example if want to buy chorizo, salami etc i go aldi as its far superior in taste but also cheaper. Most supermarkets sell salty tasteless salami for the same price.
Cheese - pretty good, i normally buy applewood and double gloucester from there as it very good value, lots of flavour. Think it is £1.09 for 150g but it lasts a very long time and the flavours improves. The parmsan is also lovely from there.
The super six is always good value, multipacks of crisps is good and taste better than walkers.
The bread is fresh tasting too.
Now i'm biased as i think Tesco and Asda are outrageous, whilst Sainsburys is better value for me due to the products i buy.
I also have a B&M, home bargains near to me, so i'm blessed.0 -

(BTW the only reason I know about the number of cheeses is that somebody once made a similar comment which prompted me to go in and count them!)Stompa0
