It's probably because you are comparing Tesco's Basics items with what you saw at Aldi. If so you're not comparing like with like.

Tesco's basic range baked beans are watery whereas Aldi baked beans are the equivalent of Branstons, Crosse and Blackwell etc. That's just one example.

Aldi products, mainly, are at least the equivalent of the major supermarkets' standard offerings. Also don't forget their Super 6 fruit and vegetables which are excellent value.

Again though - when I think about it, I would normally buy these at Home Bargains. I find Tesco own brand stuff just as good as branded products, actually better in some cases but I rarely buy Tesco Value so I'm not trying to compare ultra-economy against Aldi.

You can't compare B&M and Home Bargains with a supermarket.

These outfits do what they do very well and there's no doubt they are cheap, but they sell end of line, close date and over run stock so need to knock it out cheap to get rid of it. Due to this 'fallen off a wagon approach' their product lines are always changing and they sell a very limited range of products. During the summer our B&M had hundreds of boxes of Asda branded stock cubes for 19p a pack, I've not seen them since.

I agree to a certain extent - I mean, your B&M might not have Asda stock cubes but I bet it has some kind of stock cubes? No?

I'm not really bothered what brand something is as long as it tastes good - and sell by dates are the best things ever because people seem to think that somehow a tin of soup goes off and so the discount stores get to sell it cheap. I will happily buy things on their sell by date and freeze them - and I eat yoghurts a month after their dates with no ill effects. And that is WITH my suppressed immune system LOL

I suppose if you have to buy the exact same product then you can't compare but if I am buying porridge oats then I don't care if Home Bargains is selling Mornflake or some re-labelled Russian import. It all ends up as porridge!

My main problem was that I expected Aldi to be significantly cheaper than it is in reality. The way it markets itself leads you to believe that it will be of a comparable price with the discount stores - ie super cheap. After waiting excitedly for the store to open, I am simply filled with a sense of disappointment.

You can if you think "B&M or Home Bargains is charging me £1 for this product and the supermarket is charging £2.50 for exactly the same product."

We are consumers, if two shops are selling exactly the same product we should compare prices.

And as a consumer you compared the price asda were charging for them with the price B&M were charging for them.

Or did you buy them from asda because they have a wider range of products.
  • We have no B&M or home bargains particularly near to us, but we do have an Aldi and a Lidl 5 mins walk away, and Tescos 15 mins walk. Love Aldi for their Super 6, but tend to go to Lidl as they open at 8am and Aldi don't open till 9!! Love them, milk at £1 for 4 pints and lots of other bargains too!

I am so jealous you are spoilt!

Our biggest supermarket is Sainsbury's, Then we have Waitrose, Co-op, and Marks and Spencer. We only have the little tescos and one at a garage but not near my end of town. A small lldl opened nearly a year ago thats not bad for fruit and veg and i love the fresh garlic in the little baskets. Its just a faff to get to i need a lift.

We had a 99p store open last year i love stocking up on cereal bars that are twice the price in sainsburys.

I have been in Home Bargain and 2 b and m's when i was visting in sunderland i am so jealous of anyone who has easy access to them.

Well, console yourself..you are not alone.:)

I'd never heard of these stores either. I'm in East Kent, & having just done a search, have found my nearest store is in Essex.:rotfl:
