i definetly think aldi has gotten more expensive in the last few years, most likely due to the recession

they have employed a celebrity chef to advertise their brand, and thus attracting a wider range of buyers with higher incomes

i prefer lidl as they stock a good range of german foods and have still remained fairly cheap

    :D Well I love Aldi!
I started shopping there about 4 years ago and every week I buy about half of my shopping in Aldi and then pop over the road to Asda to get the things we like that Aldi don't sell. The super six are excellent value and generally I find their fruit and veg to be much cheaper than in Asda or Tesco and have never had a problem with the quality.
Yes, their prices have increased just like everywhere else!
As I have been a regular shopper there I know their products very well and we do have our favourites.
I spend around £240 per month on our groceries for a family of four and all of the money we have saved was spent on a fab 4 week holiday to Florida this year...so for us it is a case of 'Spend a little, live a lot'! :D:D:D

I buy the pesto, the porridge oats and the supersix regularly.

The best my tesco can manage are signs saying how they match Aldi prices!

However, Tesco reduce to pretty cheap at the end of the day and Aldi don't seem to do this. Tesco also has a better range.

I remember the first time I went to Aldi having heard about cheap prices and I was putting stuff in like a mad man but stopped and went back to check prices only to find I could get mosy cheaper at Tesco. There are some things cheaper than Tesco, but the majority of things I buy aren't.Seeing as it is a 3 bus trip I will stick with Tesco.

Yes, maybe you're right. Though having been in 4 or 5 different Aldi's, one thing that struck me was how similar they were, with nearly identical shelf layouts - which makes it remarkably easy to find what you want in a store you've never visited before! Our deli-style meat choice is pretty extensive too.

in the 5 stores i worked in they all had a similar layout if not the same, jams, bread and coffee were inside the door, made it easier for me when restocking the shelves, there will be the odd item that 1 store will stock that another store in another county wont stock

aldi do reduce stuff but it depends whether there is anything to reduce or how much there is of 1 item, neer saw a wide range of foods that needed reducing, but mostly it was alot of yogurts

I'm with you OP. Have only been a couple of times and really struggled to find anything particularly cheap nor can i get everything I need for the week, I may have shaved a fiver off my usual shop but when I cost in petrol/time/points/Amex cash back etc (which I get from other supermarkets) its hardly worth it. I do pop into homebargains every week whilst I am in town - always snap something up there.

Aldi here is good for the fruit & veg also some of the dairy stuff eg yoghurt.
Otherwise, there's no saving on price & no noticeable difference in taste. In fact the 'fresh' Aldi sliced bread went stale overnight - just as well my boys liked toast!
I can remember when Aldi & Lidl first opened and the savings were huge, now the prices are identical so I shop where I can get everything in one trip - Tesco rewards etc are a bonus then.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

I think what has really happened is that Aldi/Lidl has forced Tesco et al to bring their prices down to their levels.

However some Tesco stuff that's supposed to match is of lower quality.
Have a look at Tesco or Asda sandwich Chorizo compared to Lidl's - you'll find the Tesco/Asda stuff much fattier - I actually checked it the other day and found it to be 50% higher in fat. same foes for Serrano ham. The Lidl stuff is much better than Tesco's price match, probably on a par with tesco's finest.
