Aldi is so expensive - am I missing something?

Aldi has recently opened a new store nearby and my husband and I just went for the first time to do some shopping.
:eek::eek::eek:
We actually walked around the whole store 4 times trying to spot the "bargains" and "great value" items that are often written about in the press.............sadly we found none and the final total for our trolley of goods was over twice as much as the same trolley at Tesco.
Am I missing something? The only good value I really spotted was a whole frozen goose for £12 but that is not exactly an everyday essential - unlike the massively overpriced cereal.
I admit that we are spoiled having Tesco, Home Bargains and B&M all within a four minute walk of each other; so maybe I have got used to real bargain basement prices for my groceries. But I'm really struggling to see where Aldi beats the other supermarkets on price at all.
What am I doing wrong?
ETA - within a 15 minute walk we have Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Morrisons, Home Bargains, 4 butchers, 3 fruit and veg shops, 7 bakeries and a B&M Bargains, so that might account for low prices as they all attempt to undercut each other. Most of them can see each other out of the window too!

The Aldi's here are always cheaper than Tesco, by quite a few pence. Especially for fruit and veg.
What was expensive there compared to tesco?

Where I live Aldi is cheap, but we've no Tesco - and I've never seen a Home Bargains in my life and have no idea what a B&M is as that's an entirely new name to me too.
Aldi stuff is higher quality, it's said, so you're getting good value high quality items, which might be a bit dearer than CheapAsChips ranges at other stores. Veg is the thing most people find cheapest.0 -

Try looking at the pre packed hams, way way cheaper than the regular supermarkets. I got a couple of the butternut squashes for 69p today. I don't think anywhere else has them that cheap.0

Maybe it is just because I buy non-branded Tesco's own products that I noticed a difference. The bread in Aldi certainly seemed much more expensive.
Fruit and veg I tend to get from a stall on the market - but it certainly didn't seem overly cheap in Aldi.
I got some of the large bags of luxury crisps in for Xmas and they were £1.39 a bag! Normally I'd go to Home bargains or B&M and pay about 79p for kettle chips/luxury hand cooked ones.
Biscuits - normally 39p or so for chocolate covered ones in a discount store - 89p in Aldi.
I bought an extra large jar of Hellman's mayonnaise for £1.09 in Home Bargains last week. Aldi had smaller jars of it for £1.69.
Only the alcohol seemed cheap but we don't drink so that's no particular saving.
Think I will stick to discount stores and Tesco/Asda own brand products but I am really really disappointed because I had high hopes for Aldi.
If I notice a significant difference in quality then I will come back and post.Living with Lupus is like juggling with butterflies0 -

I too find Aldi more expensive so I shop at tesco and netto. Some things are good quality so worth the extra pence. I think Aldi is a cheap marks and spencers with they type of shopping they sell and netto is a cheap tesco. The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0

Love B & M and Home Bargains!
We only have a little Tesco Express thing here that I rarely use, and the nearest big Tesco I always find really expensive. Asda and Sainsbury's are much better value IMO.From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0 -
