Read my post again, then take some notes and reread them if my post is difficult to understand.

I am one of those that can tell the difference, as mentioned in my post what car do you drive and what year is it?

I have driven several million miles in my driving career and, as stated in my previous post, was as big a sceptic on these kind of issues as the next man, but having experienced just such a thing in my Mondeo TDCi and slightly reduced smoke in the wifes Clio DCi I can only conclude that there are some differences between the two when the car is fairly new, Euro 4 and newer possibly?

Funnily enough I remember posting all this information earlier, or do you just quote somebodies post without actually reading it?

Remember that theoretical opinion is meaningless without evidence, my evidence is that I can tell when my Mondeo has been filled with Supermarket diesel without my knowledge, such as when my missus borrowed it and I could immediately tell the difference.

You will note that I have said that it is entirely possible that such issues don't affect older diesels, or perhaps even ones that are in a lower state of tune, my Mondeo is the 130TDCi so is in a fairly high state of tune as standard, but have added that some older diesels drove slightly better when they had "cherry" diesel in them, abliet with more smoke.

The extra smoke issue is also a factor in people in Eire that use green diesel, I don't think green or red diesel is treated with any additives and ten years ago, which is when I was told this information, neither was low sulphar (?spelling) either.

So which cars have you made comparisons in?

Look reducing yourself to ad hominem attacks doesn't really help matters..
There is no empirical evidence to show that there is any difference between supermarket fuel and other basic fuels, if you have some then I am happy to accept that and admit that I am wrong. All owner evidence is subjective and doesn't prove the case one way or another, it may work for you and that's fine.
I could list the cars I have had, the mileage that I have done and the various experiences I have had along the way but it wouldn't mean much it would just be me and you getting into a p*ssing contest.
  • Getting a bit heated in here isn't it!? :D
  • Could we just agree that modern TDCI engines have issues that can be corrected by using fuel from shell, esso, texaco bp etc? It's not really a quality issue with the fuel
But heres a thought, if all fuels ARE different to the extent it affects performance and MPG, why has nobody noticed a difference between, say, esso and bp? Or Shell and Texaco? Surely THEY must all be different from each other as well.

it depends on the car and how you're driving it - if you are just pootling about in a relatively low powered car it won't make any difference to performance. Driving briskly in something quicker it will imho. our runaround get's whatever's cheapest, the family car gets ultimate/v-power.

as an aside, we had quite a few issues with misfires/rough running and poor performance in some diesel cars recently - the common denominator was a northern supermarket brand fuel. probably just coincidence.....
  • a little off the current discussion but we have had a spate of freezing diesel around the region the last few days.Initially I doubted the op but around here at least quite a few have been moaning about this.

  • The point being though that there is no provable difference between basic fuels that supermarkets sell and the basic brands sold by branded petrol stations, the only additives after the refinery stage are to produce "performance enhanced" fuels. The refinerys supply the depots with basc fuel that is then loaded into the tankers and they toddle off to the fuel outlets, whichever one that may be, any performance enhancing additives are added at the loading rack.
My local garage owner will tell you that there is a huge difference, wave his arms about and and call it supermarket crap, does he have anything to back this up, no. He also repairs cars and will tell you he has had to work on loads of cars that have been ruined by this so called crap, his son and partner will tell you though that the only crap around is coming out of the owners mouth
Back in the day I worked in a research and developement lab and had to back everything up with actual evidence not "well I think.."

I think there is no doubt that the cold snap has caught some of the fuel companies out, I doubt that the bus company get its fuel from Asda though...

They almost certainly get it delivered and bunker it on site, in the same way a farmer does with his "cherry".

As such it is unlikely to have all the additives of pump fuel, red diesel doesn't have any additives that I know of, and it never used to low sulphar either, not sure about now though.

Hence why some farmers I know of put redex in the tanks of the tractors sometimes, a bloke I know that uses red diesel in a vehicle used off road, puts half a bottle of redex in with every tank, otherwise it doesn't run aswell as when pump diesel was put in.

You have to remember that it got to -21 in some parts of Scotland, which would trouble any diesel.
  • My diesel did that too.

Started engine ran for 40sec and then cut out, wouldn't restart just fuel pump whining on nothing.

Waited till later in the day for it to thaw, it started and was running but not happy- just enough power to get it quickly into our garage, where I sat it with few heaters for 3 or 4 hours. Sure enough, started first time and 2 long motorway speed journeys haven't indicated any issues so here is hoping.

Apparently the Soviets would light a fire under the fuel tanks of their battle tanks before start up to warm the fuel a bit. You could try this.

    editted to add;

My wife has instructed me to say "do not try this" in case the OP does try this amd then sues me

You can get rather safer paraffin heaters to do this. When I was with BT, we had to use these on the trucks with external fuel tanks in really cold weather.

PS. I also remember going to my car on a very cold morning and, as you do, waggling the gearstick to check it's in neutral before starting it. Or rather, trying to. Jack Frost had turned my gearbox oil into treacle. It took both hands just to move it across the gate. I decided that, if the engine oil was anything like that, it might be a good idea not to turn the key.
