asda diesel freezing? compensation??

Hi, my citroen diesel broke down yesterday and the garage have told me its due to the fuel going lumpy / gel-like. They said there is evidently less additives for lowering the freezing point in the diesel I bought from Asda which caused this.

They are recommending draining the tank and refilling with Shell/Esso fuel. As I bought about £70 worth of diesel and the tank is not far from full, I'm not keen on this idea. WOuld be good to know if I am likely to be able to claim my money back and ideally for the garage bill also...

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

    Why not add your own additives, a bottle of Miller's is about £12.

    The old trick was to add a small amount of petrol to the diesel to stop it freezing.

    I avoid supermarket fuel.

    Apparently the Soviets would light a fire under the fuel tanks of their battle tanks before start up to warm the fuel a bit. You could try this.

    editted to add;

    My wife has instructed me to say "do not try this" in case the OP does try this amd then sues me

    It's an additive that claims to do everything, you can order online, google Millers oils, or try a local car accessory shop. Just add to the tank. I find it useful when using supermarket diesel

    This is why supermarket fuel is cheaper, LACK of ADDITIVES. You gets whats ya pays for!
    As above, add about a pint of petrol to the full tank

    Diesel freezes. It is unavoidable without doing special mixes which would then cause issues when the temp rises and some modern cars aren't happy with. You've not told us where you live. In some areas near me it was -18C last night and in others below -10 and there's not much UK sourced diesel which wouldn't freeze under that.

    If I had known this and the implications prior to buying it, I would not have bought it.

    Hindsight is 20-20...
