    Afternoon all

Well today seems to be the day for trouble with boilers!!! Went to jump in shower this morning to find no hot water and the heating was not working. OH had already gone to work so cue me on the phone to him getting instructions, had to go outside (in dressing gown and wellies) to check the flue and found a huge lump of snow had come off the roof and was blocking the flue, which in turn triggered a safety valve which shut the gas off completely. Took me 2 hours of messing about and OH having to nip home from work in the end, to get it back up and running! House still feels a little chilly now though. Thank goodness we still have an electric fire in one room, although it seems to be warming up slightly now.

So todays plans have all changed, was going to go shopping but car won't start (I suppose I should have been turning the engine over as I haven't driven since last friday) OH will have to sort that when he gets home too!:o

So cleaned up and now intend abandoning all other plans and sitting in front of the tv, with my knitting. Sc on with gammon for tea. Keep warm and safe everyone.

  • Hi,
    1st time O/S poster (and I'm Dave's wife)

I do often read this daily thread and am so inspired by all the old style hints and tips.
In my household there is just the 2 of us and have some highs and lows financially so do quite a bit of from scratch cooking, love my slowcooker and use it for soups and stews a lot. I'm quite a soup fan actually.

Dave works away 2-3 nights a week (well usually) as he is an HGV driver but work is slow not too steady at present.

We live in NW England and so far haven't seen much snow but temps round here have been -2/-4 but this morning it was -7!

Could I please ask for the chick pea curry recipe, I have a tin and maybe that would use it up, unless other suggestions come along, many thanks :)

I am no angel, I just would have felt rotten if they'd had a fall when their path is half the length of mine. My husbane may choke me when he comes home though :rotfl:

  • :rotfl: :rotfl: I could hear banging/rumbling noises outside, and have just gone out the front door to find the two wee girls from across the road and the wee boy two doors up playing inside my skip!!!! Its only a wee 4yard one, and its just full of snow, as Halight predicted last week :p they are having a riot :rotfl: its all quite tightly packed in now, and they've made a sort of slope up the side from stomping it in! I know some people will be bothered, but the three of them practically live here during the summer, and like to come and play in my garden when the boys are here or not, they are so funny, I've just told them to be careful. Too much health and safety, we would have done exactly the same when we were small.

I'm not bothered over the log in name, he isn't called Dave anyway! Its a standing family joke name but if he or I log in, then he or I walk away and the other might then look and read in the log in and then post.

I do try to post a DW at the end to sig it to me :D
  • Afternoon All

Think I will go back to bed and start again tomorrow:(

Couldn't get any gas bottles because they had sold out!
So we ended up buying a couple of oil filled radiators from Wilkinsons to keep us warm till Monday and so far I am really pleased with the amount of heat they give out. I have put one upstairs and one downstairs so at least we have some heat.
DH now seriously thinking of putting wood/coke burning stoves in the house.

DH had to go to the dentist to have a tooth pulled and when he came out some scum bag had slashed his front tyre
He said there were a lot of people who offered to help, so it did boost his faith in human nature a bit. Thing is the numpty who did it was probably caught on CCTV so DH has gone to report it to the police.

Sorry to heap my woes on you all x

Welcome Dave's wife .DD phoned to say tomorrow she wants us to go and book another room and extra train tickets for 18th December as her OH wants us all to go up to Liverpool .
Him and two of the boys will be going to the footie at Anfield, and her and I and the other two little boys will have an afternoon having a wander around the town Its her birthday the next day and although her OH is really looking forward to seeing his beloved Liverpool team 'live' he was worried that he wouldn't get back home to North Kent until almost 4.00.p.m. on the day of her birthday .So it looks like we will all be going up to Liverpool for the week-end.
Eldest DD has just phoned to say our day trip to Lille tomorrow has been cancelled because of the weather (I'm not suprised really the roads are dreadful at the moment ) so that day out has gone on the back burner for a few weeks.
No snow today, but minus 4 outside so the stuff that we have got is still hanging around.
My next door neighbour bless her came round with a loaf of bread for me that she had got when she went to the shops .I still am stuck indoors .
But I have been busy and made a huge pan of liver & bacon casserole filled with leeks, onions, carrots and mushrooms,a couple of spoons of lazy garlic and a good handful of dried sage & onion stuffing mix.My kitchen smells lovely and I shall be having some for my dinner tonight and then portioning up the rest for the freezer.
I also made a pineapple trifle .I have about a third of an apricot swiss roll in the tin so I sliced it up and lined a bowl with it .Opened a tin of pineapple chiunks in juice and tipped that in the middle and made up a pineapple jelly from a block.Put it in the conservartory to set and topped it off with some vanilla blancmange so thats a couple of nights puddings sorted.
I have not bought any food for a week now and have lots in the freezer and cupboards to keep me going .Trying to think of a good recipe for some sardines as I have about 10 tins of the blessed things in the cupboard.I may make a salad tomorrow with some Any ideas anyone .
    Cheers JackieO xx

    Afternoon All

A bit later on here today because I've been out. After being laid up with a prolapsed disc for ages I've finally felt ok enough to venture out. DH drove me to a lovely local shop to get a couple of christmas presents, then went to Advent Mass, and even managed a trip round Tesco's. It feels so good to be out, been going stir crazy indoors.
Still taking it easy, but I do feel so much better.

Really cold, snowy and icy here today, someone has driven into the car and the bumper is scratched quite badly, guess these things happen in this weather. Not sure when or where it happened, we havent been able to park the car in it's usual place because of the snow.

Making a cheese and onion pie for tea, with chips and peas or beans. All children back at school today.

Have a lovely afternoon and evening, please keep warm and safe whatever your plans.
