I had my interview for the role of Census Collector in January, was told I'd know the outcome within 3 weeks, and STILL haven't heard anything. Despite phoning for 3 weeks in a row, I've been given the same answer, which is that they are finalising the selection. I'm now in 2 minds whether to take the position at all now, assuming they do offer it to me. It's a total shambles from what I can see.

I'm in the same position, think it was the first week of Jan I had my interview. Still heard nothing, I've emailed again this morning.

I'm already in two minds about whether to take it or not should it be offered. In one way the extra money would be fab and would pay for a summer holiday, but then I think about how awful the whole recruitment process has been handled, I can imagine there been a lot of problems when the work gets underway.

I received my census form today and completed it on-line. Those recruited will be chasing up the more recalcitrant. Good luck with that. ;)

Have to admit that I had to look up recalcitrant - an excellent new word for me to use! I have received my census form today but still haven't heard whether I will be "called up". On investigating the form I have decided that I won't accept even if I get the green light - trying to persuade the recalcitrant to complete it would be a nightmare and not worth the money they are paying. I think you would need danger money in some areas.:rotfl:

I have been employed as a collector to start on the 21st March. My recruitment had been going smoothly, but now I am really not happy now.

Did all the online training, sent everything back timely, booked my class room training, making arrangements around that for 14th from the list of dates they gave me. Received a phonecall a short while ago, they need me to do the training earlier than that or I can't start on 21st. They need me to go to Guildford on Wednesday, this is hugely inconvenient, about a 2 hour drive and I really don't think I can arrange childcare for 3 children at this short notice, and the woman on the phone was really off with me when I said I wouldn't know until tomorrow if I was going to be able to make Wednesday.

I've being going with the flow on this one since receiving my offer for a very part-time census collector but think I'm definititely out now. I work full time so was going to work before/after work, weekends and bank holiday days which would give a large variety of times but having read the above, there's no way I could attend meetings every day at 2pm!! That's far too restrictive as everyone has their own schedules and with a 15 hour a week job at just above minimum wage, they can't expect people to drop everything for them.
I also had to cancel my classroom training, the times and locations were unsuitable for me as it would mean taking a day off work at short notice. Haven't had a response to my email enquiring about alternative dates yet, but I get the feeling they won't be very helpful.
I think the people that haven't heard are probably being held on the back burner as replacements for all those that drop out.

I applied for most of the various roles - co-ordinator, interviewer, collector, special enumerator etc.

I did Siftability for everything I applied for.

I did a phone interview for the collector in November and another one for the interviewer in Feb.

Not heard diddly squat about any of the roles :(
Here I go again on my own....

I don't know why they have changed the whole recruitment process. I did the 2001 Census and each local authority was responsible for hiring staff. The whole process seemed a lot easier than what has happened this year.

We also did the delivering last time which was great as it was very easy money and you got to know your area first.

I still haven't heard from this years Census, i honestly thought that as I had done the previous Census I would have got a job this time round - obviously not!

I would just like to know one way or another as I have saved some annual leave from work especially and If the Census doesn't want me I would like to take my leave and put my feet up for a few days. :)

I'm one of the Census Coordinators and i'm looking forward to having my collectors starting!! Although I think I will only be told few days before who they are.
Re: Meetings.... The 2pm meetings are only once a week on Wednesdays to receive your workloads. The first one on 6th april is the most important as you will meet everybody and receive your supplies. You dont' have to meet your coordinator every day at 2pm but you will meet him/her every 2/3 days at a place and time that you both agree. We've been asked to book rooms for 2pm on Weds as it is when the Collectors are supposed to start their day but I dont' expect all 15 of them to be able to attend every week (especially the ones on very part time).
the recruitment has been chaotic - but i think it will get better once you start.
Well I'm working hard at the mo to make it easier for my collectors with as much info on the area as possible!
    Good luck:)

I have been offered a Census collector job but will be turning it down as the area they want me to cover is miles form where I live and as it would be classed as a second job it would be hardly worth the petrol!

started as special Enumerator yesterday. It hasn't been easy so far, but we are doing a University which I understand are pretty complicated. Plus my son was sent home from shool yesterday so I'vfe had to try and work around him today which hasn't been easy!

Hope everyone else is getting on ok so far!
