To be eligible for JSA you have to be available for work. If you're contracted to the ONS till 13th May , you're officially not available for work till 14th May.

As things have turned out , i'll be doing the additional work Saturday/Sunday/Monday. Should earn just about enough not to be much worse off for not being able to claim for period 7th to 13th May.

A couple of days ago i spoke to a couple of my colleagues who had also come off JSA to work on the Census. Both had automatically assumed that they would be able to make a new claim from 7th May as the work was finishing on 6th May.

I'm afraid thousands of Census workers across the country are going to be in for a nasty shock when they try to make a new claim from tomorrow. That's why i made my initial post urging them to go for the additional work being offered.

So... What would happen if your contract ran out in december, but you last worked next week, your not going to claim till december?

To be available for work meens that there is nothing preventing you going to work that day, and you are saying that if offered a job you could work.

Put in the claim from the day after your holiday, you are not working, you are not earning anything, the fact that you will get paid at a later date doest matter as its payment for work done prior to your claim.

Who tells you that you cannot claim? If its the new claims helpline, they shouldn't give advice like that, they are meant to read their script.

If it is staff in a local jcp office, they cannot stop you making a claim, you could work 50 hours a week, and they cannot stop you making a claim. They can give you their opinion that your claim will not succeed but at the end of the day it isn't their decision.

If jcp staff refuse to take your Treat As Made date as the day after your holiday, then its still not their decision, ask it to go to a labour market decision maker. They will decide. If when its processed, a bpo decision maker will decide.

As I said, local office staff can say what they want, or say I don't think your available, however that is not an actual decision, an lm or bpo decision maker will decide based on the law and guidance in the decision makers guide. They are not local office staff.

You laugh but we've been given a yellow and a green highlighter in our packs!! We still haven't worked out what the green one is for haha.

have you been working as a collector too? there's some things i thought will be problematical based on my last 5 weeks, especially people who have moved in since census day. i came across quite a few of those. what's the point of interviewing them as if they were at their prev address? can't see how that measures accuracy, better to just ignore them.

and why can't we just use the post office online postcode lookup function rather than tramp around asking ppl what their postcode is? i reckon the post office lookup will be more accurate than that.

Its interesting to see, on youtube and facebook, so many people against the census..and so many people so much more aware of what is really going on with this then the ignorant DUMB census people that are filmed...LOL..this is how it goes..

"do you realise that Lockheed Martin, an arms manufacturer is actually running this census? That it was farmed out by the govt for £230 MILLION POUNDS.."..

    census person.."um..no, I didn't know that....are you refusing to comply?"..iM A ROBOT, I'M A ROBOT, I'M A ROBOT..

non compliant person.."no, I am not refusing, I would just like more info on this.then I will happily return the forms."

census person.."oh, so you are refusing, I will mark you down as refusing.."

non compliant person.."NO, I am not refusing..I would just like more info.."

So, as there seem to be actual census people on this forum, can you PLEASE explain why you do not know this vital piece of info..or is it, you are told to act ignorant and uninformed?..Which actually I suspect IS the case.."don't let the sheeple know anything, act stupid, act like you do not know and absolutely DO NOT get involved with any conversation regarding LM..they may be filming ya!"

Actually, it is not a legal document and anything addressed to "the occupier" is total fiction.

So, instead of bully boy tactics and scaremongering with nonsense fines to get people to fill it in..why don't the govt offer financial incentives to fill it in? It would have saved the govt £230 MILLION..just give it to the people, then you wouldn't need to spend out even more money on bully boys knocking at your door..!

It's all a complete load of NONSENSE, all this shenanigans just to get personal info..and may I ask, exactly WHERE this info is going...especially dubious as it is run by an AMERICAN TERRORIST ORGANISATION..

Hope you lot are proud of yourselves getting involved in such a pathetic job..wouldn't you rather spend your time more fruitfully? Maybe spend time with your family instead of knocking on innocent people's doors, who's only CRIME is to want to keep their person info..personal?

Glad to see the gestapo is alive and kicking in 2011 in democratic GB!

It's all a complete load of NONSENSE

You said it normally I wouldn't resort to names but you called me and 25000 others dumb, well none of the ones I met were as dumb as you

I wouldn't give people more information either, all the information they need is on the web site and available from the helpline, its up to them to decide if they want to fill it in and no I don't bully anyone.

As you seem to be a lawyer and a historian I will point out a couple of things it is a legal requirement to fill out the census if you live there you are the occupier its not rocket science and the census unlike the gestapo have been going 200 years they know what is legal. We also knock the gestapo don't.

Neither do fascist regimes ask their populus anything about themselves before they spend the money. If you don't like democratic GB why don't you move to China and refuse to fill out your census there and see who you think are bully boys then. Honestly no one would miss you

No I've not been working as a collector. In terms of those who've moved in since the census I assume they'll cross check their forms from their old address for accuracy.

As for postcodes - that is exactly what I've done. I only have 8 postcodes, so will be calling at 32 places on Monday/Tuesday to check one house eitherside at each end of the road. It has however highlighted a few numbers that I might not have been aware of! Like a number 1 a and b where google streetview suggests the entrance to one might be at the back of the house. I might never have known that from looking at the front from the street.

Have been following the thread with interest as I'm going to do the Interviewer work as from Monday - can anyone help me with a query? I've had the training ( woolly to put it mildly), been given the kit and was told I'd have my e-contract and confidentiality to complete online pretty much straightaway. It hasn't appeared and I've emailed the census site and my team leader with no result - I've also checked with one of my referees and he hasn't been approached yet. Another member of my team has had hers so I'm wondering if there is a problem with mine or is it just the usual inefficiency? I don't want to start work and then find I'm not going to be paid.

things must be effing chaos given they've sent out these emails 4 days before it's due to start! i'd imagine everything could get pushed back a couple days - the timetable ain't writ in stone, they can make it up however they want/need to. i'd just relax, wait and see.

Well , i hope you're right. But i was in the same situation during the 2001 Census. Then we didn't get a weekly wage as now , but were paid on a piece work basis. We actually did about 3 weeks work , but the letter we were sent by the ONS said the Census ran from dates stretching over about 10 weeks.

When i went to make a new claim i was astonished to be told all my benefits would be stopped for 10 weeks. This would have left me out of pocket by £100's . After appeals , enlisting the help of my MP and generally weeks of hassle , i ended up coming out about even.

I swore then to never have anything to do with a Census again , and only changed my mind when i found out that this time we'd be paid on a weekly wage basis.

So i remain convinced that Job Centres throughout the country will be under orders from the highest level not to allow new claims from Census workers till after 13th May.

I was talking to my co-ordinator who said to me that the special collectors (the ones that started before we did) only got their completion payment 2 weeks after finishing and still don't have their holiday payment so hopefully we get it all at the same time as theres more of us but just to pre warn you all just in case we don't get the lot next Friday
