I had a very nice dinner on Mr Tescos this evening for which he paid me £2 - the one day only double the difference was good but did remind me of what I was missing....
    I think....

Bizarre event of the day ... I was in a large, national supermarket and the voice came over the tanoy ... "Would .... please come to the ... desk and explain to her husband why she's having an affair with ...."

The next announcement was more stern/official: "Would ... please telephone extension ....", so I guess that would be the boss giving him a rollocking/sacking.

If you like good Italian, try Isolabella on Red Lion Street, WC1.

Anyone got recommendations for this set of requirements?

"Would you have any reccomendations for a good sunday lunch place in London with outdoor space?

Food: Anything really. price: Cheaper then Rules. The outdoor seating is the main thing. I'm allergic to Covent Garden btw. Get panicky in crowds."

    3 places spring to mind:
    1. The Crown, Clerkenwell Green. Good food, nice outdoor bit. Good crowd on a Sunday lunchtime (full of idiots in the week).
    2. The Anchor, between Borough Mkt and Southwick Bridge. Terrible food. Lovely outdoor setting by the river.
    3. The Captain Kidd, Wapping. Do a good pie on the bar menu. Nice and outdoors by the river. Cheap. Interesting mix of locals and tourists.

The Anchor is the most claustrophobic inside as it has low ceilings and gets crowded. The Crown will be the quietest, especially for early lunch as they are late risers round there. The Captain Kidd is a nice pub but any of the three pubs along the river are good in Wapping for Sunday lunch so you have plenty of fall back if it's unsuitable for any reason.

The best 2 Italians in London are Alistair Little on Frith St and Alba on Whitcross St. I should qualify that by saying that I've never been to the River Cafe.

i usually have sunday lunch on my balcony: three massive corned beef sandwiches and a bag of crisps. is this any help?

al fresco is a bit rare in central london, much easier to find in the suburbs. erm.. can't think of anywhere. bentley's has an outside bit i think, but i've never been. failing that...gaucho richmond!

Lots of al fresco in Central London. You just need to look for it.

The fringes are the places to look. Of the 5 pubs in Wapping (excluding St Catherines dock), 4 have outside seating and 3 of those are by the water for example. At a guess, 50% of the pubs in Clerkenwell/Farringdon have outside seating and loads of pubs in Borough do too.

well yes, but i suppose it depends what you mean by al fresco e.g. the crown in clerkenwell's 'garden' is, in fact, just a load of (quite rickety) seats on a wide bit of pavement out the front of the pub (also the street it is on is very close to a post office depot, and a big red post van goes past at about 1,000 miles an hour every 6 seconds - maybe not on a sunday though!). was one of my favourite pubs in london about 9/10 years ago, but they annoyed me when they did it up and put a gymnastics horse in the middle of the pub!

there's loads of pubs with "outside bits", which mostly means drinking on the pavement. when you do find something with a garden out the back it usually backs onto a railway or something like that! it's difficult to think of a decent restaurant (or even gastro pub) where you can sit and eat dinner in a spot that's not swarming with pedestrians, or traffic, or both.

central london's a great place to drink on the street out the front of a pub (nothing better on a sunny friday evening after work) but not for eating outside, not in my opinion anyway. you're basically eating in a traffic jam.

now i think about it, there is a bit on the south bank of the thames just beyond city hall which is ok, it's mostly chain restaurants like browns though.

there is a dim t right on the river near city hall which i think has outside tables, so lostinrates is sorted anyway.

I'm starting to struggle. I'm feeling all  about sunday. I was ok til today as I've had distractions (bowls match monday, derren brown wednesday) which kept my mind clear. Although I have a bowls match tomorrow, all I can think of now is
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

What a waste of soup :)

Surprised your toms are ripe already  Ours are just starting to flower.
How many tomato plants have you people planted? We did 15 this year.

This is the first time I've ever attempted to grow any vegetables in my life and so far - "touch wood" - I'm amazed at how well it's going

The house I bought last year has a south facing garden with a "sun room" tacked onto the back of the kitchen. It is single glazed and in a poor state of repair, and is boiling right now and was freezing in the winter - but it's making a fantastic greenhouse :)

I planted 15 tomatoes, all of which are doing nicely, 8 cherry tomatoes and 7 chillies. I really hope the chillies work out as I'd love to make my own chilli oil for pizzas etc.
