I find the main problem is getting out of the driveway. If other cars have been up and down your road, there's no good reason why you can't too.

Go to A1, then head towards London to Apex Corner, then A41 to Watford. I tend to steer clear of the M25 as much as possible. Anyway, that's how I would go.

Thanks for that, I never though of heading southwards to go north!

Normal I think, despite everything he is the father of your children and a huge part of your life.

Some days I have a small buzz of excitement... today one of my websites alerted me to an income opportunity, and I have a slot I need to replace on my main site as the daft company I recruit for have a £1000 limit. That little slot makes me £100/month or so, so I got in touch with the company to see what they pay for signups and I'm now waiting to see if they have [a] any deal at all if it's worth my while [c] if my site is accepted by them as an acceptable recruiter. In my wildest dreams they'd pay double what my current advert does and be uncapped :)

I do hate waiting for "approval" though. Probably getting all excited that it'd be a good deal and they'll blow me out as having a tacky site :( Which it is.

We got about 3/4 of the way there and got stuck on a really quite gentle incline (and I'd chosen the flattest route). The children got out and the nice man in the car behind gave me a bit of a push, and I got to the next turning, where I spotted a parking space right on the end of the row, and parked. We walked the rest of the way. We got home OK afterwards, but I am not driving again until somebody puts some grit down.

BBC News have done a few good iplayer video tips for winter driving over the last few years. A few experts say (1st and 2nd video) for better traction from start-off, forget starting in 1st gear and use 2nd gear from a standstill (not for automatics obviously). The high the gear, the better the traction for driving in snow/ice. It works well for me, (starting off from 2nd gear on snow/ice) for better traction where otherwise would have bad wheelspin or be stuck.

There was also a similar piece at BBC News this year (video 3), and the guy said to begin driving from a standstill up an incline. get going by just to slowly release the clutch with no pressing of the acceleration pedal.

Well that looks a bit of alright doesn't it. Nice that the kids get to use the garden too, with the football nets,.. and not just all kept immaculate for a 'show garden'. Even better if that 'shed' at the bottom of the garden is yours, and not the neighbours behind you. Looks like a log cabin type small house. Also; nice winter scene pic. What made those tracks at the right?

It looks lovely doesn't it! I imagine silvercar and her family have super times there together, but I liked the way the track maker had kept to the edge so as not to spoil the virgin snow for you :)

    do-pester ;) you notice everything! :D

The Volvo automatic has a winter setting that keeps it in a highish gear. So did the other two automatic cars we have had in recent years. It still doesn't stop one wheel from spinning and getting all the power sent to that wheel by the diff. Once you get started, the traction control is reasonably helpful at keeping everything moving, but it makes for a very uncomfortable stop-start ride.

Don't forget that if you start to slide it's better to ease off the brakes, so at least you have some control over direction.

I have kept driving to a minimum, as the chance of causing damage to the car is just so high at the moment.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

re driving: we're pretty ok sensibly in the Land rover BUT his morning I hopped out to open the gate and as I turned saw the LR slowly sliding towards me. You cannot let your guard down any time in these conditions.
