    who uses laundrettes anyway?!

The characters of EastEnders? Seriously, I don't know anyone else though I'm sure they must exist or I wouldn't have one near me (though that does dry cleaning too).

Incidentally I've got a variable spin speed on my washing machine (2 year old Zanussi) and I find that if you take the clothes out and hang them on hangers on my rotary indoor airer on a 700 or 900 spin speed that they dry slower, but require less or now ironing compared to a 1200 spin speed. Could that be a useful trade off?

I also have a suspicion that the components aren't upgraded for the extra load - a quick google for reviews of most of the non-premium brand larger drum machines shows complaints for bearing failure starting at just over a year old for most brands. May be I am better going super cheap small load and accepting it will fail in a couple of years?

Previously I have done second hand with great success but that was in pre-family days when a small machine was adequate.

You can see the washing machine issue is dominating my life - went to the laundrette this morning - a large load washed not dried was £5 (so £10 for 2) and the spin was obviously not very fast so a lot of drying left to do at home - and at 5 per load that would be about 30+ quid a week for us - wouldn't take long to pay for a washing machine even discounting the hassle factor - who uses laundrettes anyway?!

My cheap but large load washing machine is still going strong 8 years later (she says touching wood very firmly)

I'm just trying to remember if we have any launderettes left here.....hmmm, don't think we do anymore, the last one closed about 3 or 4 years back.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Confession time. I save up all my towels then take them to the launderette for a service wash and dry. Costs about £12 and they come home smelling beautiful and fluffy.

I used to take horse rugs, till they (rightly) stopped me. The really big machines take a large horse rug, my home machine won't, and getting them horsey laundered is not cheap, doing by hand is a ruddy, stinky, hairy nightmare. I'd LOVE a reconditioned laundrette big washer for the animal washing. I could do a laundry service for rugs too :)

I like your blog. Honestly though? I think it looks, but not reads, a bit impersonal, which is a bit cold and feels a bit ''artificial''. You are extremely personable person, the only reason I feel I can say this because I know its within your power to reverse that and that honest feedback would be helpful. I hope. Please forgive critique of something I can't do is meant with good wishes and fondness!

My wife is on her practical part of learning to be a speech therapist. They give two types of feedback: 'positive feedback' and 'constructive feedback'. :) LIR, your comments were a lovely mixture of both, and it was good that you made the positive comments first! I am learning. I usually only gave constructive feedback, which made me difficult to work with.

You don't like my Miele suggestion? One machine to last you until the family's grown up? Our 16,000 hours of use reflects an average of 3 loads a day when there were 7 of us in the house. But we saved on drying by hanging a lot of it up on one of those frames that's on a rope from the ceiling.

My parents had Mieles when I was growing up - the first one lasted longer than the second. However it is at least twice (3x?) the capital outlay and they do sometimes go wrong but I guess are worth fixing rather than just scrapping.

Well, ours has lasted 13 years of really, really hard use and is expected to go on another 5 years or so. The one I pointed out at John Lewis is £699, so that's twice what you paid for the Panasonic. (I've forgotten how much you said you paid!) But you'd be getting a brand new machine, rather than shop-damaged. The Miele's 6Kg not 8Kg, and I think it's 1300rpm not 1600rpm. Incidentally, it's not just rpm that counts but the diameter of the drum. The Panasonic may be very well built too, ofc.

Oh, and best of all, you'd be dealing with JL not Comet! :)

Tomterm, its looking a bit better already...the kiddy pic helps.:)

I was going to give you some brassica recipes but can't work out how to comment lol. A friend's sister is wondering what to charge me for setting up a website and I've been offered a page ad on a friends' website but don't feel ready to advertise yet.

The wind is setting of my neuralgia so I've retreated inside holding my ears and whinging.

I bought a freezer from them last year...they delivered and the lovely delivery men carried it through, unwrapped it and......there was a dent..cosmetic not damaging function. Comet said it wasn't their problem and I had to call the manufacturer which I did and got some money back....my choice was money or another freezer...chances is it would get cosmetically dented here too and its in a utility room not on show so cash speaks louder than pristine to me.

michaels this will apply to you too....

lir this is complete and utter b0ll0cks & makes me

It doesn't matter if it is on display or not. Even if it is second hand, the sale of goods act applies. The goods must be suitable for the purpose they are designed, advertised & sold.

Comet are one of the worst for referring you to the manufacturer. What the phuq has it got to do with the manufacturer? You have no contractual relationship with the manufacturer. You bought the machine from comet. They have the contractual obligations towards you.

    GGGGRRRRRRRR!

LIR if you bought a brand new item from comet, & it came with a dent, then that is comets fault.

I will never ever shop at comet for any goods over £100. This is based purely on how I see them treat customers and also their goods. Joke company, and they are LIARS!

sorry everyone, I get a bit emotional when these corporate gits abuse the rights of people.:o
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
