Pobby - there is a really jaundiced view of the world on parts of the forum, maybe best avoided if you are not feeling 100%. It can be quite depressing sometimes.

I think some of us rarely venture into 'Debate' now, and I've never been in the Arms. I don't get in here enough, because I'm often too tired after my 'physical' days, so I barely keep up..... Pobby, mate, I don't know how old you are, but I'm 62 and wishing I'd started this retirement thing five years earlier! :o

On the washing machine debate, I'm another Miele fan. We bought ours ten years ago and it came with a 10 year parts & labour guarantee, which spoke volumes to me. I suppose it is due to go wrong now! If it does, I have an inherited Zanussi, which was for the ferret washing in the days when we had ferrets. :rotfl:

Our tumble drier is 20ish. It's never gone wrong, but has to be switched on and off at the plug, because the on/off button is shot.

When we were preparing to move in 2007, I threw away the freezer I'd bought with my first house in 1977. It was still working fine, so I felt guilty, 'betraying' it like that, but I was only following orders! :o:o;)

I'd prefer it the other way. If your machine heats the water it needs, when it needs it, there's no waste. No other system needs to be working either, so you don't have to heat your water first, or make sure your tank's hot, or turn the immersion on. Just flick the washing machine switch and it's job done.

I agree. you know when you first turn on a hot tap and you get a load of cold water until the hot water "comes through", that's what will be in the washing machine. The machines don't take that much water, so you won't get the hot stuff from the boiler, you'll get the cold stuff from the pipes between your boiler and the machine. That's why most machines these days are cold water fill.

Hey PN, I've been googling and found this http://www.bhs.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/bhsstore/978150/233089 which with a sand down and paint might do the job, don'tcha think? I wish one could see inside the shade to see what all that looks like. The tripod is actually a bit neater than the original....no visable wire!

I prefer cold fill and a lot of new machines only have this - at my old house we had a thermal store hot water system and the hot water could get really hot which always concerned me with delicates being hit by 70C hot water whilst the washing machine tried to get the temp correct.

I still think spending 355 upfront for a machine with a 6 year parts and labour is better than 1250 (best price I can find for 1600 spin 8kg Miele) for 10 years but it is obviously not that clear cut - perhaps if my income was more certain going forward the capital expenditure would feel safer.

It is great to have you back Pobby, Ill send you a PM.

LydiaJ do you get hayfever / allergies? Mine started ridiculously early this year in Feb and one of the symptoms (which it took me several years to realise was a hayfever symptom) is headaches. I am very sensitised by all the dust and some mould spores from boxes from the garage s that may be why I have got it so early this year.
    I think....

Pasturesnew, I have never washed by hand, but I spent five years doing it ala laundrette... don't really like them.
I grew up with mum using an old twin tub. I found it easier to wash my stuff by hand than to wait until nobody else wanted to use the kitchen (9'x7') then get that out, fill it up, then empty it again.

At least with hand washing it's instant.

Yes. I'm sure the shade part is removable anyway, so you could poke around charity shops/similar/car boots for "the right thing" too. Or, just make your own with some bendy wire round something big and round (waste paper bin, for example).

Edit: Did you check ebay? Here's one at £12. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tripod-Table-Lamp-Light-White-Shade-Chrome-New-/230538688866?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Lighting_Lamps_Lighting_SM&hash=item35ad2d3962

    Interesting thought. Thanks.

Yes, I do get hayfever, but not so far this year. The headaches are self-inflicted, I'm afraid. I get them in an entirely predictable way when I don't have enough sleep, and have done for years. They're quite vicious and after dd was born I had a few that were proper migraines with flashing lights and everything. I think the sleep-deprivation connection is why they don't respond to plain painkillers. The only things that have any effect are paracetamol-aspirin-caffeine combinations (which I use during the day) or paracetamol-codeine combinations (which I use occasionally if the pain is keeping me awake and therefore stopping me getting the sleep that would actually deal with the root problem).

The thing I had over half term was definitely a cold virus - someone else at work had it very nastily just before I caught it, and it went through all the stages in turn - a couple of days each of sore throat, streaming nose and bunged up sinuses before subsiding to an irritating lingering cough.

And yes, I am very foolish to be online at 2.40am complaining of sleep deprivation headaches (although tonight's hasn't come back even though the painkillers I took hours ago should have worn off by now). But the whole house is comparatively tidy (as in stuff is either put away or in tidily stacked boxes) apart from the kids rooms, which I will do tomorrow. It's been worth staying up to get some relief from the "out of control" feeling that I've been getting from having to keep climbing round mountains of semi-unpacked chaos for the last couple of weeks. Now I can start dealing with a box at a time, especially when these lovely friends come round to help.

PS lir, you say the nicest things. Thank you. :o:)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Are you doing that for your holiday? :) Have you decided what to do/where to go this year?

Applied for a combination of reasons. There was a worry that we would have a lower income into the house, so I thought it'd help (along with my other 2 jobs!:o). When that fear temporarily dissapated, I still thought it would be interesting & useful, as I have seen the benefits of census research with my folks tracing their family trees, and also the research I see/read about in some of the complicated Jack the Ripper books I read.

    Plus it is useful experience.:)

And I'm not doing it in the area I live, but the area I work, to learn more about the people there.:)

And yes, the £ will be handy. Especially for holidays. I still have absolutely no idea where to go though! I am contemplating Whitby, as people tell me it is beautiful there. Need to come up with a few options.

Pobby, you are highly thought of & valued here. Your absence has been mentioned, as we were worried about you.

Positive nice people vibes will always be eminating to you from us.:)

I think PN sums it up brilliantly & eloquently...
