I do wonder in these situations, why someone doesn't just get a similar looking relative to fedex their passport out to the stranded person.

One with the right visa? LOL! Very devious. Mind you, it's high risk, as UKBA'll skin you alive if they find out.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

AIUI, silvercar, it's a visa thing, not a passport thing. Suppose you have a visa to come here to do X. Then you decide to change your circumstances so that you should now be here under a visa for doing Y. They don't like you to stay here and just start doing Y. They like you to leave and then apply (from your country of origin) for a visa to come here to do Y. When they've given you the new visa, you can come back in. If you are here for X, change your circumstances to Y (even if still also doing X), and then leave, they may or may not let you back in. Sometimes they make you go back to your country of origin to apply for your Y visa before you can re-enter the UK.

But I'm remembering a conversation from many years ago, so don't take my word for it.

Makes sense. I had a hairdresser once who met a waiter while holidaying in the Dominican Republic. He came here on a tourist visa to be with her and they got married. He then had to go back home to apply to come here as her spouse. So she spent the first 2 months of married life single.

My update is that I have finally given the keys back to my rented house. :j It's been a bit of a nightmare, really.

    We finished on Sunday evening.....

Not too much of a nightmare I hope Lydia. So glad to know that you are finally there and hoping everything is proceeding as you would want.

    Good luck!

I would much rather they let me back in really. But yes, they can make me pay my own way back to my country of origin. and back again.

Not sure what's happened here but I hope you get it sorted out quickly. Take care.

Looking at a week-long course in 4 months' time. Price is right and they offer residential, which makes it unaffordable.... so I have some affordable alternatives lined up, but I thought I'd ask if anybody's in the HP15 region and wants to offer B&B for 6 nights :)

It's best I ask now, than find out one of you lives just a mile from where I'm going and could have put me up.

crashpadder's good for this type of thing, cheap as chips it is there.

So that's High Wycombe then? I'm afraid I'm not too near there but there are maybe one or two who aren't so far away, although one mile is probably rather hopeful!

    Lucky you've got a plan B anyway though. :)

It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I'm just trying to work out what else they could do?
