  • After a lot of hassle getting my MAC code from AOL after cancelling my agreement due to the increase in charges ( they only sent it after a complaint to IPSA), I have just given my MAC code to BT who said that they will transfer me from AOL on 30-12-10. AOL have terminated my internet access immediately despite the fact that they said in the termination letter that they would continue to supply the service until my connection with BT has been completed. After contacting them they said that it wasn't their problem as I was no longer a customer and that it was now BT's responsibility.

Customer service at its finest !!! I'd rather pay double than be ripped off by these charlatans. Complained again to IPSA and I'm awaiting a response.

Still no reply from AOL other than the std email saying that they had received my email!

Just received a reply, basically it was waste of time even bothering to complain, in the old days they would jump through hoops to keep customers now they belong to CW they don't care if you leave them.

I have reviewed your email and I can see that you have some concerns regarding your subscription charge from January onwards. I am very sorry to hear that and will certainly do my best to help you.

The price of broadband will increase to £19.99 per month for certain areas. This was a business decision based on a number of factors, including the VAT increase & the increasing costs of maintaining a broadband network in your area.

This notification was sent to you with a minimum of 30 days notice, which is in line with our terms of service to give you ample notice of any price increases.
If you have any further questions or comments please feel free to contact me again and I will be more than happy to help.
Trouble is that being connected to a small exchange with little chance of unbundling we are stuffed!
  • Had a telephone call from a irish woman with my MAC code . It seems if you deal with someone higher things will get sorted

I've just checked my AOL bill and it seems that I've not been subjected to the price increase. I received the email saying my monthly charge would increase to £19.99 (currently £9.99 as I get a £5 long-standing discount). When I spoke to their call centre in Ireland they said this was happening to all unbundled exchanges (which includes mine) but they gave me £30 credit and said wait to see what happened in January.

Well it seems nothing's happened, long may it continue... I get a really good deal with AOL, my monthly charge also includes unlimited anytime landline calls, and I don't want to have to change.
  • Price rise doesn't start until 04/01/2011

But AOL bill in advance. My bill is for broadband from 28/12/2010 to 27/01/2011. I can't imagine that AOL will give me more than 3 weeks at the old rate... (Hopefully)
  • Legally they cannot impose the new VAT rate until 04/01/2011 so I would expect the price increase I'm afraid

In 2005 BT set its wholesale line rental at something like £104 per year for residential lines, which presumably AOL would have been paying since then, so why the drastic hike now? In April this amount is due to be reviewed but no charges have been determined and this has to be Ofcom approved anyway.

Is this just an excuse to raise monthly charges pre-empting a possible price increase of WLR which is as yet undecided?

I'm the same as Nilrem, my exchange is probably the smallest/oldest one on the planet and I have very limited choice. BT broadband or AOL who I've been with for years. The reason some people didnt get the email is that they were sent only to the master screen name. I forgot the password for mine yonks ago and now cant get it because when I try, AOL tells me I don't exist and am not really me.
I spoke to India then Waterford and got lovely people both times. They gave me 3 months free to shut me up LOL but I'll take it ! :)
  • Did you get tied into another 18 month contract for your free 3 months ? Thats what they offered me but never stated it was a new contract until i asked then swiftly said no thank you
