AOL price increase*check your emails and action within 30 days*

Hey guys,

Just checked my email to see aol were going to be increasing my monthly payment from £12.99 to £19.99.

Rang them up to cancel and they stated the usual rubbish that as I was still in contract I would have to pay a cancellation fee etc.

As I was on the phone I read their T&C's and it state there:

9.2.5 !!!Where you cancel an account whilst still within any minimum commitment period for any Access Service(s) to which you subscribe (other than where you are cancelling as a result of a change to a Service Agreement under clause 11.4.1), in addition to your obligations under clause 3.3.3, you will be obliged to pay us any outstanding amount due under the applicable Price Plan Agreement(s). Please see the relevant Price Plan Agreement(s) for details.

So 11.4.1 is:

11.4 !!! Changes to the Services Agreements

11.4.1 !!!It may be necessary for us to change one or more of the Services Agreements from time to time. We will provide you with notice at least 30 days in advance of such changes taking effect if these changes could reasonably be deemed to have a material impact on you or are to your disadvantage. If these changes could reasonably be deemed to have a material impact on you or are to your disadvantage and you don't agree to the changes proposed, your only remedy is to cancel your AOL Access subscription in accordance with clause 9 above. By continuing to subscribe to and/or use the AOL Access Service(s), you will have accepted the relevant changes.

After reading this I argued that they were changing the origional T&C's I was int right to get out of the contract without penalty, to which she agreed with after speaking with a manager.

This HAS to be done within 30 days of you being notified though so please, anyone in contract with aol please check your emails and call to cancel if you don't agree with the price rise.

Sorry if this post seems disorganised, compiling it on my iPhone as my laptop screen is bust at the moment. Any questions I will be happy to help.

Cheers

Steven

  • I wondered if anyone else had this email too.

I've been with them for years (not a cable area and had no probs) and so after they promised me a drop in price for 18 months I thought I might as well be in a contract again. I've just contacted them because I signed up for 18 months only in Aug so I've got a long way to go and I don't intend paying £19.99 for this.
The phone conversation I had with the girl who persuaded me to take it up revolved around her telling me I would save £x over the 18 months and no change to service etc. Clearly I was sold a lie as this is more than I paid before August, and over the 18 months I will pay more!!
I've sent them off an email and will see what happens.

For those who renewed a contract with aol this page says what you agreed to, and to me the "applicable amount" is what is stated in my contract not something that changes (ok, I'd accept the 50p or whatever vat increase) during the contract period.

    It's only a game

I also got that email!!!!. £19.99!!! - they are having a laugh. I have just emailed customer (non) support to see if I can remain at £14.99 p/m
  • The lady I spoke to yesterday said they wouldn't be able to keep the price down (at £12.99) for me as there are price rises across the board. Flipping stuck trying to find a decent Internet deal now which is sending me into a rage!

Did they keepthe price down for you rolo?

I'm currently on £9.99 per month and got the email saying this would rise to £19.99 ... Phoned AOL (got India) and was told there was nothing they could do about this so I asked for MAC code (I'm not in contract). Transferred to Irish call centre who said that I shouldn't have got this letter. Apparently it's all to do with whose equipment is in the exchange... Anyway, I was given 3 months credit (£30) and told to check the bill in January. If it's gone up (though he doesn't think it will) then ring again for MAC code.
  • Rang AOL back in August intending to leave as BT had offered me a better deal than my £14.99 AOL package. Was talked into staying by them giving me 3 months free if I accepted an 18 month contract (working out at the same price as BT) Got this email yesterday stating they were putting my plan up to £19.99 from January and spent the next half hour or so trying to get through to customer services as 'they were experiencing high call volumes' (surprise surprise). Finally got through to India who said there was nothing they could do expect put me through to cancellations? Put the phone down in the end after another 20 minutes on hold, listening to the rainbow song! Rang back today & opted for cancellations department first off, was told again there was nothing they could do except cancel, which I felt I had no other option but to do. They didn't even try to talk me out of it, except to tell me that the average price for my area is £17.99! (Still cheaper than them!) Feel absolutely furious that they have done this, have been with AOL since 1998 and never had any serious problems. Am now left with the chew of finding another provider - Merry bloody Christmas AOL customers!!

I'm another recipient of the lovely £14.99 becomes £19.99 per month email. How to tick off your 8+ year duration customer, eh?

But, I'm in the cooling off period for a change of landline from BT to TalkTalk (AOL UK's parent), already got TalkTalk to give me credit for BT termination charge.

Emailed them (not paying their 0844 charges to hang on for ages) to say unless freeze at 14.99 then the landline switch is off plus they lose me from broadband.

    I'll see what happens.....

AOL treats its customers very badly.
I'm not surprised to read this post, I'm just so glad we got out a few years back after they tried a bill changing stunt with us, and then called us liars despite it all being there in black and white. Some Irish woman from their cancellation department tried to talk us in to staying, but being called a liar was the last straw.
    A O hell.

  • I'm furious with AOL. Been with them nearly 10 years. Currently paying £12.99 a month.

I had a call from them last week offering 3 free months broadband, so long as I agree to remain with them a further 18 months. I agreed.

Low and behold the confirmation email arrives and I discover the price is shooting up to £18.99 a month!

The woman on the fone didn't mention this. How convenient.

Anyway, I've sent them an email asking to cancel my AOL broadband.

    Nice one AOL.
  • Completely outrageous from AOL!!:mad:

I am about 13 months into an 18 month contract that I agreed to because of the agreement to have 3 months at £7.50 and 15 months at £14.99 (£13.74 average).

The 18 month contract is not up so surely this is wrong/illegal?

I will email them, but have no intention of paying extra.
  • It's all because they are part of that cracking Carphonewarehouse family, which includes TalkTalk. So I would leave ASAP if I were you as they are an absolute nightmare of a company.
