Gosh pippi, that comment was unutterably rude!   I see you've responded - not got time to read it right now but I will. makes me SO mad that people post mean comments on other people's blogs anonymously (or indeed at all!) Pah!

Commented on the blog. Some people just do anything to get attention. And Pippi - you are just the best!!!"Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end."

Karmacat - Not been to the UCLAN obsy myself, but think DH has (much more the active astronomer). We have our own observatory in the garden, though needing repairs atm. DH has two telescopes, so I can still keep in touch with the stars and the rest of the universe once in a while when I feel the urge. Well done on developing your own moon piccie...it's like magic when it appears isn't it! Sounds like you had a great time with your diploma.Wow! Thats way above my standard, I'm afraid - my little distance learning diploma course was half of a foundation year, so no thesis as such - I did do a "project" - weeks and weeks of star sightings - which was fascinating, and I had a weekend at the study centre - it was run by UCLAN (Lancashire) - they have their own astronomy site with lots of portable telescopes and an 18" in a dome - saw a sunspot live, with filter of course, developed my own picture of the moon, fun stuff like that
You had a broken back ???:eek::eek: you poor thing!
Pippi - hope you're okay - I suspect your electricity may have gone off?
Pippi, sorry for being a bit abstruse. The area I studied is a star nursery in the constellation of Cepheus, where lots of new stars are being formed. Nothing can be seen in visible light yet as everything is buried in dust and gas and the "light" is emitted at different wavelengths. So we look at these different wavelengths (eg infrared/radio) using radio telescopes. Masers are a bit like lasers, but instead of visible light, it is microwaves that are amplified. I looked at Hydroxyl masers, but you can get water ones too, it's a giant chemistry lab up there! Does that help?
ROE is Royal Observatory Edinburgh, on Blackford Hill. RAL is Rutherford Appleton Laboratory - next to Harwell in Oxfordshire.
As for the Garden Design, that was at Pershore College...quite near here. I loved doing it, but I often had to shoot back and fore to Scotland as mum was very ill. She died a few months after I finished, which really floored me. I was working in a garden centre at the time and did a few designs for customers...but I guess I didn't have too much confidence in getting a business up and running. Then just as I was feeling I could take the world on again, I had a bad fall at work and everything went on hold (again). Now I have the chance to possibly venture out there again, there is very little money going on garden designing these days. As I will never be well enough to work as a paid gardener again, I am a bit stuffed atm!!
Still thinking of how I can work things out...an ongoing process!
Sorry about the ramble...I do feel I have wasted most of my life...done lots of things, but not achieved an awful lot...if that makes sense.
Enough of this moping...got to water the grenhouse plants now...DS has done the rest bless him.
OOh, just noticed, the wind has here dropped...calm now. Hope things are calming down up in the land of the wind!!!:eek:to the ash falling..you'd hardly think the wind would let it!
Love your reply on your blog re the basil...what a marvellous way with words you have...well done you! :T:T:T

Pippi, how very rude. What a waste of space some people are. Loved your response and I have posted too. Hope you dont mind. Some days there aren't any trumpets, just lots of dragons.
