i work within an extremely ethnic area, as a white woman i am in the minority

from what our sonographers tell us it is not usually asian women wishing to find out the sex of their baby, most asian cultures would abhor any sort of termination, and in fact when severe abnormalitys are detected they do carry on with the pregnancy as that is allah's will

the propagander (sp) you may have heard is nothing short of the medias attempt at stirring up islamaphobia

please do not believe everything you read in the daily mail!

It may well be that these days it is more perception than reality that terminations of female foetuses are carried out to any great extent. The issue is not pure fiction, however. The practice is alive and well in India, even though it is illegal. There is certainly anecdotal evidence that women have gone back to India to have the terminations.

You paint a picture of a person more understanding of the ways of ethnic minorities, but you have failed to grasp that this is one issue no one has tried to pin on Muslims. You are right to say that most Muslims would regard terminations as contrary to their religion. Preference for male children occurs to such a strong extent that a termination may be considered in India, where the predominant religions are Hinduism and Sikhism. I believe it is the additional factor that considerable dowries have to be paid to the groom's family to 'marry off' brides that tips the scales. A family can get into serious debt if they have to pay out for, say, three daughters over the course of two to three years.

Having said that, I believe nottslass is right to say the main reason hospitals will not disclose gender is due to time constraints. However, I am sure that in some areas when they made the decision they thought that saying 'time constraints' would conveniently take care of any possible issue with gender selection.

you do have a point and i thought about that after i posted, i shouldn't have said islamaphobia.. but the thought its just plain old racial hatred is a bit scary!

i do accept that in many cultures they would prefer a boy.. have to say though, how many white middle class males would prefer a son first? - many would and freely admit it

i have no doubt that some extremely dodgy practices occur in india, i do hope they are the minority

however, this has no bearing on why some hospitals do not scan for gender.. althoug the amount of people who beleive this is astounding!

There are practices all over the world that we would find repugnant, and 'foreigners' also find some practices here deplorable.

The point I was trying to make (not well, I grant you) was that to mention something unpleasant that occurs in a community does not mean you are damning the whole community. I wrote it because I sense you fear people are seizing any opportunity to think poorly of Asian populations. Trust me, I am not. And yes, whilst gender selection by termination does occur, the fact that it is illegal (and therefore is a secretive affair) probably does mean it is not widely practised.
  • i found out with all my 3 children...but they were wrong with the last, strangely though i hadnt got any pink clothes etc and we couldnt decide on a name so it didnt matter that we had a boy instead, he came home in a pink car seat though lol

unfortunatley you are right there - i do fear that people are seizing any opportunity to think badly of the asian community - by no means am i accusing you of anything.. i have no idea how you view the ethnic minorities!

i think the media are very much to blame for stirring up peoples emotions on this one.. and people just do love to beleive the hype

i think it comes from fear - people fear what they do not understand

i have first hand witnessed some terrible racial hatred where i live and work and am quite sensitive about it i guess :(

  • How can this be fear or prejudice when Lady Desai is speaking out about it?!

Is this thread serious? I mean no offence but it's the sex of the baby. You don't NEED to know until it's born. Be thankful you are pregnant. Just because you pay tax doesn't mean you are entitled to anything extra, millions of us pay tax. Also isn't the whole blue for a boy pink for a girl outdated in 2010? Just be thankful the fetus is healthy, that is ALL that matters.
