Do you mind me asking how do you afford all those meds, it must be a nightmare. I'm currently waiting for different tests etc after staying away from doctors for over 12 years (lost all faith in them). I have various health problems, back, coccyx, feet, and in the past 5 years or so, I've developed terrible joint pain and severe fatigue/tiredness.

I'm now worried sick as all the changes will mean medicals etc, and of course the fact that I've avoided doctors may look as though I was hunky dory when in fact I've merely existed. I've been in terrible pain/discomfort etc over the years and hope that maybe I'll get some relief now - although going by the dismissive way the doctor I recently saw acted - I very much doubt things will change except for me getting more depressed (if that's possible) . I already go to bed and hope I don't wake up and when I do the feeling of despair is unbearable. I didn't know where to start in trying to discuss my many ailments - and never managed to discuss them all in any detail (you only get a short appointment). My family don't bother with me as they probably think I'm a right whinge, especially as one minute I'm complaining about my coccyx pain, then it's my feet, then my joints etc. I must sound like a nightmare. Only fellow sufferers would understand I think. I miss my lovely mam something terrible. You always realise how much someone meant to you when it's too late........

I won't qualify for free prescriptions as I don't receive income support and I'm worried about the cost of numerous prescriptions that I may get. Do many of you buy the yearly certificate?

Sorry for the long winded whinge, but I hate news years eve as I'll be alone as usual - and things always seem worse

I would think that virtually everybody who takes multiple prescriptions will have a prepay certificate as it only costs about £10 per month (over 10 months).

Sorry to disappoint you Jo Jo far from wasted I have had an education. I have a law degree and a business management degree I am wise enough to know a total waster when I see one. I do not fake symptoms why would I!!! So let's pity the alcoholics shall we , self inflicted illnesses should be excluded from any benefit the money should ge given to people who developed illness beyond their control and hey one cure for an alco stop taking it!!! Why should my tax be used to fund their weakness.
It's so easy to say you an alco just to get money!! Their are drying out units in hospitals for that purpose. It takes. Stronger person to walk away And say no.

When did a degree in making money/talking management speak to the easily impressed simultaneously qualify you as a psychiatrist, rheumatologist, neurologist and police officer?

If you get carpal tunnel from continually typing spiteful memos to menial staff about their sick leave, for example, surely that's self inflicted? You've been a desk jockey for so long, surely someone so 'smart' in so many realms of expertise would have displayed the intelligence to avoid any nerve impingement?

People who abuse alcohol are in a catch 22 - some drink to try and escape depression, but then get caught in the situation where alcohol itself acts as a depressant. So just stopping drinking may leave them in the situation of crippling depression, which still needs treatment and can result in care needs.

'Inner strength' is an insult to anyone who has experienced a mental illness - if it just required a bit of gumption to make oneself happy, they wouldn't be ill in the first place. Or are you implying that anyone who self harms or commits suicide is simply lacking in moral fibre, as in years gone by? Some will subscribe to your opinion that feeling depressed is a failing in their character, so rather than seek medical help, as that would involve being less than worthy, they drink instead in the absence of medication, CBT, counselling or anything else that may have served them better.

There are many, many people with substance abuse issues who have comorbidities, such as bipolar, schizoaffective mood disorders and the like. There is still more stigma attached to psychosis rather than getting drunk, so it is very possible that one will be freely admitted and one never mentioned outside the home.

To get treatment in a detox unit, there has to be actual medical evidence of a chemical dependency - blood tests, liver function tests, breathlysing - anyone found to be not undergoing withdrawal would be shown the door pretty sharpish as there are hundreds of people desperate for these rare and incredibly expensive places at risk of brain damage, seizures and death from abruptly stopping consumption and entering full blown withdrawal and delerium tremens.

Of course, if you would prefer to be paying for the long term residential care of the people suffering from Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome as a direct consequence of the course you suggest, then I would assume you have seen the relevant cost benefit analysis that shows it is cheaper for Society to have dying, demented individuals all descending upon hospitals and doctors, some turning to crime to fend off the withdrawals, to care for those who are brain damaged, to bury those who die, or those who still have care and mobility needs from other non alcohol related conditions?

It is Interesting how you imply that you aren't affected by Tramadol. That suggests a tolerance, if not dependence in itself. Maybe this barely readable diatribe isn't evidence of insufficient education in the basics of written English, but is due to the effects of your medication - something that could colloquially be termed as being too wasted to communicate effectively or demonstrate empathy with other human beings.

Hey Jo Jo your honestly wasted in your current capacity perhaps you should join the health service I am sure they would appreciate your considerable expertise in matters of health. In my career as a desk jockey I have been threatened, intimidated, my office hit by mortars, saw friends killed, maimed etc, etc, real life experience that living in N I could only give me. How easy to grab a bottle and say poor me, it's someone elses fault, but no I chose to grab life with all the good it has and embrace it. You only think you have experience. You have a lot to learn you cynic. Try seeing your friends legs blown across a room or your pal on fire. I am not drug dependant, don't smoke , don't drink so don't judge !

Does all this explain the large number of wealthy junkies and alcoholics? No, it doesn't.

In reality, all these options are true. Some do suffer from mental illness, whereas some don't. Some take to these things for understandable reasons that deserve sympathy, whereas some don't. It's not quite as black and white as either the Daily Mail or the lunatic Left would have us believe.

Worked for them, ta. They did appreciate it. As did the patients.

Seen quite a few people threatened, maimed, dead, injured, whatever too. The BT8 postcode doesn't have the monopoly on bad things happening. I generally had the skills to avoid antagonising others in person, so didn't get threatened myself. Perhaps the MBA programme is a bit duff in that respect.

But I don't let it colour my perceptions of others. Any illness is still an illness, any injury is an injury. A judgemental, aggressive poster trying to use shock tactics to try and win a point in a match that only they are playing gets the benefit of the doubt at first, as perhaps they are unwell, suffering great unhappiness, have a small organ or some such issue that I, being a stranger, am in no position to support or decry. To do otherwise would be too cynical for some of us.

But eventually, it becomes clear that some are just plain mean.

I must remember to mention your theory at my next victims of terrorism forum if we had all been just a little bit less antagonist we might have avoided the loss of 3500 innocent lives not forgetting the maiming and suffering of countless others. You deserve all the benefits you get as you are obviously deranged
  • :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Strange how things go from one person being accused of unfairly claiming benefits despite the accuser having no access to their medical records to mental illness being a sign of weakness to the entire protestant/catholic/my god is better than your god insanity in just a few posts. And from unwell person to lawyer to business executive to battling in the streets of Belfast to international terrorism expert!

There are a whole load of issues going on there that really have no relevance to the fact that alcoholism doesn't in itself entitle people to benefits, despite what the more angry amongst the population want to believe. And it would be more productive to focus upon sorting one's own claims than getting chewed up over perceived slights by illusory antagonists as all it does is fuel righteous indignation whilst achieving nothing useful.

Or we live in Wales :) I'm still getting used to not having to fill the prescriptions in or pay.
