That's why we've arrived in such dire straits as far as immigration is concerned it's been so fashionable to condemn anyone that so much complains about immigrtaion as racist when it is no such thing.
There is a lot more to consider than race here and thankfully we all seem to be waking up and realising this.
As for the Eastern Europeans invading the UK they should never have been allowed in the EU in the first place they have nothing to offer and everything to gain.

Love it, firstly you claim that discussing immigration isn't racist, then you write off half a continent as "invading" the UK and having "nothing to offer".

Discussing immigration isn't racist. Your attitude is.

Economically they don't have anything to offer but everything to gain.
Don't try to intimidate me with the racist card, that's why people stopped speaking up about immigration in the first place.
Immigration issues cover much more than race.

At no point did I try to intimidate you, however the fact remains that you are claiming millions of people - the whole of eastern europe - have nothing to offer economically.

You are talking rubbish. I am currently sat in an office of 20 people, which includes an Estonian and three Turks. I presume they should just pack up and go home now as they have nothing to offer? Similarly all those other migrants who have come to the UK and found jobs, presumably they are providing no benefit.

I am not for one second claiming that there isn't unneccessary migration, nor that the freedom of movement within the EU isn't causing problems. We all know it is, and that there are people effectively milking the system. But the vast majority of eastern european migrants to the UK come here to work, pay taxes and contribute to our society.

Wow it took five pages before someone leapt in with the unsubstantiated R word...would you care to substantiate this accusation or is it just the usual dogma that people are discussing immigration therefore they must be racist ?

No discussing immigration isn't racist but its true that some comments made on here are.

Being racist isn't always just about name calling as many seem to believe.

We do have an illegal immigration problem but so does most of world were not s special as certain right wing media would like you to believe. We not a special nation any more sorry people.

We have a population problem not just a [STRIKE]illegal [/STRIKE] immigration problem, 62 million at the last count.

The countries infrastructure is becoming very strained already many areas of the country suffer water shortages and one report I read predicted a 25% increase in demand for water by 2020.

Cutting immigration is only a drop in the ocean.

How can criticising east europeans be considered "racist"? are they not the same ethnic background as "British" people?

I think it is fair to say a lot of east europeans aren't beneficial to the UK economy. Most I come across are on the minimum wage. What they pay in tax must be less than they take out in benefits and the NHS etc.

Anyone really think Romanian Big Issue sellers are good for the UK economy?

No they are no the same background as us. But i do agree that its not racist to be discussing this issue...

I dont understand how these people you say are working for minimum wage are taking out more in benefits and the NHS? How do you manage to work that one out then?

well the services that we depend upon such as the NHS/ benefits/ roads/ education etc are paid for out of taxation.

Research has shown that only the top 30% of tax payers pay more tax than the benefits they receive from the state.

I think it fair to say that most east europeans will be in the 70% of taxpayers that receive more from the state than they pay in. Obviously this 70/30 figure is a rough estimate. For instance if your never sick etc your more likely to pay in more than you receive.

Having said the above the beauty that east european girls bring to the streets of Glasgow is priceless. I think Ali G had the right idea on imigration - "only let fit birds in"

What an intolerant bunch you all are, with some of you borderline racists. It makes me ashamed to be associated with this forum.

Everyone is racist i am affraid even those asylum seekers, economic migrants. I ignored the fact i am racist for years as i thought if i worked and lived with different races i could never be racist. But i am just as prejudice as the next person and those who say they aren't racist are liars. I am not ashamed of my views and those views aren't set in stone as i have tried to better my understanding of the cultures i have grown up with.

I don't consider myself to be racist, I love my job and I work with and for some very lovely people from all over the world. I don't treat foreigners any differently to "white" or "English" people and I don't hate any particular race or creed. In fact, my heart sinks when I have to deal with middle-class white mums who all go to NCT classes and expect a midwife to come round every day and hold their hand while they come to terms with the fact that they cannot get their newborn into a "routine" and that their tummy is not as flat as an ironing board. Give me a cheerful West African or Polish mum anyday, they appreciate the care they receive and are willing to do things and to learn for themselves.
But come and see our labour wards, they are often full of people who have quite literally just come here to give birth on our NHS, or check out the sub-let council properties that are inhabited by people who are not entitled to be here and anyone will realise that we have a problem in the UK. There are simply too many people who are taking advantage of the lax procedures within the benefits system and the health service. No-one wants to take responsibility for deciding who should be let in and who should be made to go.
We recently treated a Chinese woman who, when asked, showed us her student visa. It expired in 2008, and the paperwork quite clearly showed that it hadn't been renewed. She was also using 3 different names, that we knew of. We have an "overseas" department in our hospital who check these cases out. After 10 minutes of investigation, the officer told me that it all seems in order and that we should continue to treat her, (not that we would have turned her away at 36 weeks pregnant anyway!) He told me that "if necessary" the hospital would send her a bill. Guess who is not living at the address provided? And guess who will be paying the bill for her and her baby? That's right, us taxpayers, as usual.
So law-abiding workers are losing their jobs in the budget cuts, to pay for illegal immigrants to have their kids in the UK? That's not a racist statement. It's a fact.
