I'd really love to know the answer to all this supermarket fuel debate.
To me - it makes sense to assume that all the money big oil companies spend on R&D means they are bound to contain different additives and detergents depending on whether you fill up with Shell or BP or Esso or Texaco etc. So, to say your car is smoother or more efficient with one and not the other could very well make a lot of sense.
BUT, what about the supermarkets? They are going to be supplied by the same big players... so what about the additives? I suspect supermarket fuel does not lack additives and detergents, but rather it does not contain the same ones that a lot of money has been spent researching and developing. But I could be wrong.
So, as long as my local Shell is the same price as my local Tesco... i'm going to Shell. Every little helps:D0 -
So just to be clear... You pay a premium for a modern diesel engine that won't run on diesel fuel unless it comes from a specific retailer??
If that's the case I'm happy I run a petrol carAlways try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Depending where you live almost all your fuel is going to come from the same refinery, for example if you live in Ellesmere Port your fuel will be coming from the Shell refinery in Stanlow regardless of whether the pump says Shell, BP or Sainsburys.
Regardless of who refined it, the base ingredient is the same.
However each fuel company will specify their own blend of additives, so when the BP lorry fills up at Stanlow, it's Shell-refined diesel, but BP additives. Same with Sainsburys and Shell.
The supermarkets will (allegedly) go for the cheapest possible blend that meets the relevant standard and attempt to differentiate their product on price. The big names attempt to differentiate their product on quality, engine cleaning additives and so on. e.g. Shell Fuelsave.0 -

I recently moved house and therefore started to fill up regularly at Morrisons. This has caused problems on the Fuel system and did not make for a happy car, as it was lacked acceleration and was very lumpy when running.
The first question my local garage asked me was where do I fill up and they said that the quality of fuel at supermarkets is not worth the price as they do use the cheapest fuel around.
I have now been back to the local Esso and most of the problems have now gone.
From now on I will go to the local Esso, and it is the same price as Morrisons

That's the bit I don't understand, When the supermarkets first started selling fuel they succeeded because their products were cheap. Now they aren't. Locally, Tesco is actually more expensive than either Total, Jet or Shell.
So why does anyone buy from them?0 -
