Why does it say "Ford recommends BP" in the filler cap then :rotfl:

Same reason washing machines live longer on Calgon I suppose. :rotfl:

Could be a coincidence. Could have been water in the fuel filter freezing, diesel with a low (higher) waxing point, but some fords just like shell and not much else.
Stick to what you know works.

    I don't know what is causing it, but the coincidence involves three factors;
    1. Sainsbury's City Diesel
    2. Sainsbury's Thetford
    3. Sustained Cold Weather - below freezing temperatures
It might be water in the fuel, it might be waxing, but whatever it is it it is down to Sainsbury's. Either poor fuel with not enough additives to reduce waxing, and support combustion, or poor storage allowing condensation/water to build up in the fuel.

I've googled problems like I was getting and Sainsbury's diesel seems a fairly common factor in occurences like mine involving Fords from as far back as 2004.

I realise that there is no definitive evidence one way or another, but I'm convinced, and to be safe I'm going to avoid supermarket fuel as far as I can.

As the breakdown chap who attended me on Sunday said, the amount I save in buying cheap fuel (which may be as little as £100 a year) is far outweighed by the possible costs of repairs due to damage caused by using cheap fuel.

Damage caused by cheap fuel is probably not covered by any warranty, and unless loads of drivers are involved the costs are probably impossible to recover from a filling station.

I filled up at Sainsbury's in Bury St Edmunds on the friday before Christmas and have had problems ever since.
Fiesta 52 plate diesel starts up ok, go down the road a few miles and the engine slows down and flashes up EAC fail on the dash.
It has stalled on me a couple of times, failing to start afterwards, give it about 20 minutes and it fires up again.
My local mechanic should be open tomorrow.
Must be down to the diesel, car has never played up before.
  • whist this should be a whole load of carp i am glad I have found others with simular odities. Some supermarkets do have a higher Bio eliment, but as you can run a diesel on chip fat it just doesnt make sense. I would love somebody to come up with a good reason behing waivering MPG and other more serious issues seemingly from fuel though

You most definitely wont be running a modern diesel on chip fat. Works great in older cars (which also run fine on Sainsburys diesel) though.

A lot of newer diesels have a recommendation to not use more than a small percentage of biodiesel, some say never to use it atall.

Couldn't possibly be a failure unrelated to but coincident with filling up at Sainsbury's?

I love the idea that because your car has never gone wrong it never will.:)

Jeez, some will never be convinced. Just because you drive a flippin Land Rover with about as much technical innovation in the engine as a 1950's Russian Tank does not mean that you can run a modern lightweight diesel engine on any old crap.

The only thing I did was to sort the fuel out. Engine warning lights don't tend to sort themselves out if it is a mechanical fault.

If Diesel44 just improves the fuel and it sorts the problem too, then that kinda seals it for me. Different filling station, different car, similar problem.

Will be very interested to hear the outcome.

A 1950 Russian T55 tank was far superior. Even had a gas turbine engine fitted in one.
