    So, what you are saying is in all the companies you have worked for the HR people are to thick to realise you have taken 12 months worth of holidays but only worked 10 months.

    In all the companies I have worked for the HR people don't work that out, the computer does it for them. They just bring up your record and the computer tells them how many holidays you have earned, how many you have taken and what you have left.

    If you take more than you have earned and then leave the computer automatically deducts it from your final pay.

    Exactly.

    (Which is really all there needs to be said.)

    please give this a lot of thought before dismissing it. Its the most efficient method of using holidays to your advantage rather than not using them. I have explained this many times and its a hard concept to take on in one sitting. Eventually you like all the others will come around and start using this.

    Seems like a lot of effort for not lot of gain.

    I prefer to take my holidays as & when I want to use them. I rarely take longer than 1-2 weeks on one go.

    + this has nothing to do with pay rises. Its purely re: holidays.

    the company had 5 weeks per year holiday 2 days per month
    job 1 started in 1980 in 1980 I took october as my annual holiday after working 10 months
    1981 september after working 10 months
    1982 aug after working 10 months
    1983 july after working 10 months
    1984 june after working 10 months
    the company I worked for got bought out in 1984 and we got rehired by new american company they honoured the old accrued holidays and I still had loads of days left over as I only took 1 month a year which never comes to more than 23 days
    the holiday system then changed to 2.5 days per month so off I went again and started and because of the number of bank holidays in december I asked for december to use up all my holidays
    So off I go again until 1991 taking one month earlier every year. In 1991 changed to Scandinavian company who gave more holidays and were very accommodating especially if you don't take holidays in the summer.
    So you can see it is very easy to do this.
    Another top tip is whenever you change companies always remember to tell HR when you are handing in your notice that " my new company has asked not to be identified before the notice period is up". That way they just pay you the 1 month notice and escort you to the door. In my case it was a 3 month notice period.
    One other small point for Caroline 73.
    if your holiday year is jan to dec then how can anyone ever take any holidays in jan or feb to go to Orlando for 4 weeks. The holiday period is a rolling period depending on the month you joined the company. So if you joined in august your holiday year is august to august and every month HR put 2.5 days into your holiday pot so after 10 months you have 25 days in your pot.

    Not in any company I have ever worked for, or known anyone else work for. They have all had a fixed holiday year, usually 1st April to 31st March.

    If you join part way through the year then you will only accrue part of the years holidays, and they will only "advance" you part of the years holiday.

    And when it gets to the end of the year some won't let you carry over holidays, others will.

    I suspect what has happened is you have read, and fallen for a spoof on the internet and now are trying to be clever by claiming you have done it.

    It one of the "scams" that sound as if it will work, until you look at it closely. In this case it sounds as if it will work, until you remember the holiday year and the fact that HR keep track of how many holidays you are entitled to and how many you have taken.

    So taking your holidays two months earlier each year may sound clever, until you realise most people actually do take their holidays before they have "earned" all of them. And all that happens is they work after the holidays but don't accrue and more until they have "paid off" what they had in advance.

    If you call it doing nothing,you are dead right. You get money for doing nothing. All I can say is carry on working 11 months every year between your annual leave while you could be working 10 months. I am no mathematician but I expect there are some reading this .   • Just one question, Mumbles. Do you acknowledge what Geordie Joe explains, that most regular company employees have a fixed holiday year as described in the quote below?

    Note: If those of us with a fixed holiday year (say Jan - Dec) want either Jan or Dec off, we simply take it. If it is Jan, then we take it and balance it out by not taking so many holidays for the rest of the year, or if Dec, we take less earlier in the year. I get the feeling you have somehow never worked under this very common system. That may be what is causing your frustration, and everyone else's (including mine!) lack of understanding.
  • In all the companies I have worked for holiday entitlement was accrued on a days per month. The holiday year was relevant to keep count of number of days taken every year was not greater or less than the accrued entitlement . So starting work in january and taking 1 month holiday in november has always been perfectly acceptable and then in the second year there was no problem taking holidays in october. So the period worked between holidays is only 10 months. As I have hinted in other posts because of my skiing holidays I needed to split my holidays into 2 blocks but all I needed to do was change the reduction to a two week period on both holiday blocks. The effect was the same
  • No frustration here. Please try this method next year. Just look what weeks you booked this year and book exactly the same number of days/weeks/months but 1 month (or 3 weeks or 2 weeks) earlier next year and tell me that HR writes back to you an tells you you can't do this. Then you will understand
