Where exactly did I call anyone a con man then? I'd be incredibly interested to see that myself as I think I must have been sleep posting. I posted a link to Rdel's posting history and pointed out that he knew a lot about mattresses.

It was also made clear by another user that Tim Deegan had used his wife's account to promote his business as a 'satisfied customer'.

Both of those posts are fact, and can be backed up.

Apologies I didn't put that correctly. I was just answering your general question. You didn't call him a con man but I saw the post earlier from someone using that term.

I think facts need to be posted and people should have the right to make up their own minds. As long as facts are stuck to, without abuse, I see no need for removal of posts.

Facts indeed but the term con man is a invitation to litigation both against the site and the user of the term.

People think they are anonymous on here if they don't put their real name but it is easy to get a court order against both MSE and the ISP to identify the person. Its called a Norwich Pharmaceutical Order after a well known case in the 70s

Calling someone a con man and using his real or identifiable name is not free speech it is akin to setting the site and themselves up for a defamation case.

According to Wikipedia:

Con Man or Conman may refer to:
A con artist, or a person who uses a fraud method known as a confidence trick

A confidence trick or confidence game (also known as a bunko, con, flim flam, gaffle, grift, hustle, scam, scheme, swindle or bamboozle) is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence. The victim is known as the mark, the trickster is called a confidence man, con man, confidence trickster, grifter, or con artist, and any accomplices are known as plants. Confidence men or women exploit characteristics of the human psyche such as greed, both dishonesty and honesty, vanity, compassion, credulity, irresponsibility, naïvet!, and the thought of trying to get something of value for nothing or for something far less valuable. Confidence men or women have victimized individuals from all walks of life.

I'd say it was pretty damn close to the truth and I should know as I am a 'victim'

Hi all,

That was indeed a fair number of posts gone - but the very first page of the Forum Rules linked from the top of every page states that this is not a "freedom of speech site". I'll quote the most relevant parts below to save you the trip.

Please note too that if your post contains a quote from a post that has been deleted - then your post will normally be deleted as well.

If you would like to ask for the deletions to be reviewed you are advised to contact the Forum Team. There's a link to them in my signature that you can use.

• We can be liable for what you post. This isn’t a ‘freedom of speech site’ as when you post something not only are you liable, but we can be liable too as the publisher once we have notice of it. So it's not a case of posting what you like – we can delete posts if needed - though of course our aim is to ensure legit info about saving money or fighting for consumer rights stays.
• Posting is a privilege not a right. This is a privately owned site. Posting is a privilege, not a right. Any inappropriate posts or any issues that take up a disproportionate amount of site resources or make it a worse place to be will be stopped at our discretion - with or without explanation. No one pays to use this site; when there are issues we pay to resolve them. And sometimes we need to prioritise spending money on the site, other issues or better resources.
Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. It is not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. Any views are mine and are not the official line of MoneySavingExpert.

There's moderation and then there is censorship...
HEAR HEAR
Whilst I agree some posts should be removed ala the forum rules, ones that highlight important facts should not, if only to protect potential new customers of Tim Deegan's who don't get the chance to read all the posts and therefore make an informed and balanced conclusion before buying a mattress from him...

Mods - if you want censor something really offensive, head over to B e d l u m's facebook page where Tim is actively promoting his association with MSN stating, and I quote

"The person who will be answering most of your questions will be Tim Deegan, who is well known for helping 1000's of people through the minefield of buying beds and mattresses on the Money Saving Expert forum"

Thanks for pointing out about his facebook page-good work on your behalf.
Why could mse not forsee he would do that-everyone else could-hence the heated threads where dissenters get called every name under the sun,or get treated like naughty schoolchildren.Savvy, youre a star

I can understand why post deletion is the path of least resistance when facing potential legal problems, however I'd hope that MSE wasn't being intimidated by empty legal threats from a certain someone.

Most of his 'advice' remains unchallenged on the forum and now it seems like he's trying to profit from his association with this site despite the ignominious way he left it.

I have no idea about what the legal situation might be.

For the record, BG's don't get told any more about deletions than you do. If we report a post or thread we get exactly the same automated response that every member gets and no more.

So there's no point in taking up any case that you feel you have with a Board Guide because there's nothing they can help you with. Same for posting in a thread.

The only way to raise your concern is to talk with the Forum Team.

Again I'll save you a trip to the Forum Rules and quote a relevant section...
We ask that users:
• Don't report Private Messages inappropriate posts to Board Guides or individual MSE Team members.
This is not what Board Guides or MSE employees do and they cannot help - they often don't have access to the tools (that includes Martin). Reports must be sent to the Forum Team via the forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com email address.
• Don't comment on reported posts in the thread.
Just report it and let the Forum Team deal with it, however much you feel justified to make a comment. If you do, action could be taken on your posts as well. Please don't quote the post, as this causes the Forum Team more work.
• Do not start a report saying "I can't believe you haven't removed this already".
The forum is not monitored and the Forum Team only acts when it receives reports. Emails like this are not polite and won't win you any plaudits. It's likely the reason it's not been dealt with is no one has reported it yet.

I think it'll be more appropriate for you to start your own thread in the Praises, Vents & Warnings forum.

I was just following up on a long conversation I have had with people on here, but if it is unwanted, I won't bother anymore. If anyone wants to know my experience, you can PM me.

Nah Wally. You're supposed to ignore posts like that. Keep it coming. He/she's not the posting police.
