LOL I was just wondering how you were getting on.

I've just been lying in bed reading a book and thinking how pleased I am with the bed. Makes me realise how much the old bed was rubbish.

Just a suggestion but when I first got the new mattress, every night I would lie in it thinking about how it felt and analyzing everything. If you have two more weeks to go anyway for the next two days when you got to bed don't think about it at all. Just got to bed, get comfy and go to sleep. As soon as I stopped thinking about it I started liking it alot more.

Defo agree it is very firm but I've found this to be a bonus.

p.s if you are a book reader in bed then a memory foam pillow(shaped like a normal pillow) is a must!

That might be easier said than done at the moment - but I will try. I am sure I could do it the other way round - if it gets more comfortable, I will not think about it as much!

Still hoping the Madrid will soften up - I will come back and let you know what happens. Two weeks and counting....

Hi I kind of dipped out as I have been busy. But like you I am waiting for my Madrid to soften up and it really is not happening. I liken it to my sides fighting with a mattress and losing. Still waking up in pain (to my sides). Also the smell. To be fair Tim has been very good, offering fair advice. The smell has lightened up a bit but not much. I still wake up to Eau de Mattress - horrid and mild headaches. Mini Me is really not amused as she is still not allowed in. Most people say after 8-9 weeks it gets better. That is a long time methinks.

BTW went to Centre Parcs for 3 days and not a whiff of headache and very comfy nights' sleep. I do wonder if foam is an acquired taste...

If my mattress improves in the same way as Rdel's did, I will be happy, as having to do the exchange is a nuisance (even though it is a great service to be able to exchange if needed). If I get an exchange for a Venice and I like it as much as Rosie383 likes hers, for example, I will be happy too. (There are possible outcomes, but I am blocking them from my mind!)

I think it is reasonable to give the Madrid a fair try, as it seems that these types of mattresses do take some breaking in (e.g. http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Mattress-Buying-Decision---Memory-Foam-Or-Latex?&id=4735477).

However, I can also understand someone who is in pain not wanting to continue sleeping on it. At least now anyone trawling through these forums (as we have all done) will know what to expect, which might make things easier. If I thought there was no chance at all of my Madrid improving, I would probably feel the same as Allstar. But since I have read reviews like Rdel's and the article quoted above, I can continue to hope!

Mine does have a smell, but I assumed that was part of the chemical manufacturing process and would disappear with time.

Wonderful article. Tim did talk me through most of this (not walking on hands and knees though:rotfl:) and this is the reason that I am bearing with it. Also I have a total enclosure cover so this has to be totally removed each time for airing out the smell I did this yesterday and it was the equivalent of 20 minutes of running!

Interesting to read more about the headaches - mine were really severe initally, hence the ban on the little one. With new purchases I think it would make sense before use to take 24 hrs out to air out after removal from the plastic. I wish I had done that.

NB I am not Tim in disguise, :) I have found his personal customer service very good and he ALWAYS answers the phone.

Just thought I would point out that's an old post and both have been posting on here since that was posted. So is there somewhere that it states both have been stopped from posting as I can't find it. But I have to admit it's about time he was stopped from he's way of selling.
Thanks for any help and advice given

Nice one Wally. Hope the new mattress ticks all the boxes.

Let me know the final result.

  • I bought a Madrid mattress from !!!!!!Beds, after discussion with Tim.
Delivery etc. was good, as were communications, and I am glad to report that Tim lived up to his promise to change the mattress if it was not suitable. I think that is an excellent aspect of the service from Bed-lum.

The memory foam part of the Madrid was quite soft, but the underlying spring part was very hard - in fact, I would say it is the same as a firm orthopaedic bed (which is what we had before this). So, I would only recommend the Madrid to someone who likes a very firm bed.

If you have not used a memory foam mattress before (I had not), it feels strange at first. It almost holds you in place. I had the impression that I did not turn over in bed as much as usual. I am not sure that is a good thing though, because it means the pressure stays on the same parts of the body.

After two weeks, I was still finding this mattress too hard, so I discussed with Tim, who suggested I try it for another week, which I did. In the end, I tried it for four weeks, because I had to wait until the delivery was coming to our area. However, it was still hard, so he said he would change it for a Venice, which is a similar mattress, but has more springs, hence it is softer.

I paid the difference in price, the exchange delivery was free, and the delivery service very good, as previously.

I have tried the Venice for three nights now. My impression is that it is softer, but not what I would call soft. I expect it will soften a bit more in use. I am sleeping better than I did on the Madrid, and am definitely glad I made the change.

My impression of memory foam is that it is quite warm (I did not get the climate control fabric, whatever it is called). I expect I will switch to my summer duvet - even though it is only February! Also, as above, I find I am not turning over as much. I am still not entirely sure this is a good thing. However, I will wait and see how I get on with it. Other people have said memory foam takes a bit of getting used to.

I will report back when I have given the Venice mattress more of a fair trial. For the moment, I am reasonably happy and am optimistic that my opinion will improve as it settles in and I get more used to the memory foam experience.
