Think it's more to do with the law of gravity.

Can't answer your other question, as apart from first 3 months, I haven't taken any supplements.

thats what I was going to say lol.
I felt lying on my back I had to push more as the baby has to go horizontal a bit more, and often up.
But when on all fours gravity helped the baby go straight down.

its whatever you feel comfortable with.
I had the urge to be on all fours or my knees. It felt right for me to get the baby out quicker. I felt it put less strain on my bits so I had no tears. When I was on my back I tore slightly. But that could just be because it was my 2nd.

Im hoping to use my couch this time to lean over and be on my knees. I bought a cheap shower curtain in Asda the other day, ready for the mess lol.

Thanks ema......dont suppose you know why we should take calcium, RLT, and epo do you?? What are the benefits?? Xx

Im not sure about the calcium as I hadnt heard that before.

Ive taken RLT with my last 2 as i heard it made your uterus contract better and helped in the pushing stage. It doesnt help with pain or anything but it meant at the pushing stage I had no problems. 1st was out in 15 mins with 4 or 5 pushes and DS was out in 5 mins with 2 pushes

    Arnica helps bruising heal.

EPO, im not sure about that either. I thought you used it like a pessary and it helped with stretching etc, I dont know about orally.

    Sorry thats not much use.

  • What is the reason for not being on your back when you give birth? I've never heard why it's discouraged.

Can anyone answer my earlier Q about what supplements I should e taking in the run up to labour? And why? I'm 32 weeks on fri.

Got my 31 week MW appt this morning, just celebrated a lie in with a bacon and egg sandwich :)

As hitchins says before....at our antenatal they have been saying that womem are encouraged to move around and be more upright during labour as it aids bubs coming through the birth canal and hence can make labour a bit quicker

Got my form for NHS exemption card to send off today, also got an appointment with a physio for my back:D

Do you think if I left work on 25th Feb or 4th March is too early to take mat leave if I am due middle of April? x
VB I finished 6.5 weeks before my due date and am sooooo glad I did as I am in agony with SPD now but not sure how I am not going to balloon in the last few weeks as I want to eat everything in sight lol

RLT and EPO can soften things up a bit from what I have read....they don't actually aid labour but again can make things easier.....wow listen to me giving advice and all that jazz lmao

I wouldnt say he was gorgeous but he was lovely!!! really nice and supportive and both me and oh were like oh hes not what I would expect a male mw to be like. I would deffo have him at my birth - hes certainly better than the mw's ive met this time around!!!

GB - kids really do know how to make you feel special dont though this morning ds came and said "why is your hair all this mess and fluffy?" I was like "well thank you good morning to you too" lol

    :rotfl::rotfl:

Yes it was nice to see how much he really enjoyed his job. :)

With DD I had a couple of student MW's around and they were amazing, so attentive and caring, even came to ward the next morning to see how we were. They're not "hardened" to the job.

In terms of giving birth on your back, it just seems that everything I've heard backs up that it is better to be in a more upright / all fours position as gravity can then help, plus your hips are more open / cocnyx (sp?) isn't in the way.
The teacher at our NCT class showed us a doll sized baby going through a skeleton pelvis and showed how much more easily it happened upright. 2 of my close friends have used upright positions and both had really easy births, my friend said moving and squatting made the contractions much easier to handle rather than sitting down.
Also I've been reading a book on active birth, which explains (sorry I'm going to be a bit vague as I don't remember dates etc) that in the olden days birthing used to be more upright, midwives had birthing stools etc. The book suggests the start of women birthing on their backs was some important chaps wife, and it was done so he could watch through the curtains, so not because it was beneficial to the woman. The book does recommend moving to find the best position for labour and birth.

Having said all this I've never been through it and I can appreciate it must be exhausting and lying down might be the only thing that appeals at the time. I'm just scared of being forced to lie on my back either because of montioring / pain relief / some other reason, or simply lying on my back simply because the bed is there and it seems the right thing to do at the time.

Sorry I can't back all this up with facts and figures, it is more based on opinions than fact, but for me I've heard enough to think it might be worth trying to avoid it.
