I dont know how you can all watch OBEM it scares the living daylights out of me...... I'm trying to stay positive for my homebirth with just TENS, G&A and warm baths (not all at the same time obviously) so watching OBEM makes me feel negative.....

I feel the same SJP. I watched the first 2 OBEM last week and I didnt enjoy it at all. I decided not to watch anymore. I know its in a hospital setting, but seeing all the medical intervention is making me worry if having a homebirth is the right things to do.
My first birth with DD was similar to those ladies. i was lying on a bed and not encouraged to walk around at all. i was constantly monitered. i didnt know any better.

But with DS i was in a birthing centre and I wasnt alowed to lie down lol. They let me walk, bounce etc, I gave birth leaning forwards over a huge beanbag, it was fab.

Someone posted a link a while back about homebirths (i think it was GFH or Susan) I forgot to save it and would like to read it again to put my mind at rest.

Morning lady bumps and Okie dokie SJP

OBEM annoyed me last night....your woman that kept singing was sooo annoying but can you imagine what she might have been like on G&A lol :rotfl:

didn't sleep very well last night at all but did manage to get over at about 4ish and slept til 7.30....will go back to bed again later for a while as I have antenatal tonight so want to be able to stay awake...am going on my own as hubby has a meeting he can't get out of :eek: lol

Oh oh oh I use another website as a reference point for local activities and had put my info up asking for anyone in the area that wanted too to contact me about setting up a wee friend network and I got a couple of replies and we have arranged to meet for coffee tomorrow woohooooo

back is much better today so I think ill just take it easy today - not hard lol

I think I may be entitled to the maternity grant becuase we get a lot of ctc and it says if you get more than 500 and something then your on the higher amount. So think Ill print the form and fill it and get midwife to sign when im next there (or giving birth as thatll prob be quicker lol) and send it off I mean theres no harm in trying and if I am entitled then ill be well chuffed!!!

I do think it's worth remembering that OBEM is filmed on a high risk unit & it's a hospital that takes the most high risk cases in the neighbouring counties as well. A lot of those women may have had reasons for being monitored that were not explained on the programme. I know if you are induced they have to keep a closer eye on things. I've got friends who have had their babies there & they were all actively discouraged from lying on the bed & they do have a fair few things available to use like balls, birthing stools etc. although if a woman wants to lie down they can't stop her... It is a TV programme that will be edited in such a way that makes it all that bit more dramatic to keep us watching. I've been watching it with interest as it's where I'm having my baby

I'm glad you said that as its the main thing that worries me watching OBEM, the fact that so many of them seem to be lying on their backs giving birth. I have told my OH not to let me, but not quite sure how I'll react when he does!!

I think the more I hear about it the more I'm hoping to go to a birthing centre, we have one I could go to but OH is panicing that its further from us than the hospital, and the transfer to the hospital (if anything goes wrong) is 45 mins.

We have no plans to go on the show although DH is happy to, not sure I'd like everyone pulling apart my birthing experience as it's such a personal thing.

One of my friends who gave birth there last year had previous home births & she still had a really positive experience even though it was at a high risk unit. I've not heard anything negative from my friends who have given birth there. A few did give birth on their backs but that was their choice. Some did lie on the bed but that was their choice. The midwifes did try & encourage them to be up & active but after so many hours they said they were just too tired/worn out etc. & that's it's all well & good saying be active but sometimes you are just too plain exhausted.
