Thanks Garnet, I wonder why neither my GP or hospital midwives have mentioned this to me???

I was swabbed for MRSA at my 36 week appointment last week, but no mention of flu!

    I'll ring them tomorow.
I was only told about the flu jab yesterday. I actually asked about it, but she said it was one of the things she was going to bring up anyway because they've been told to let all the pregnant ladies know.

It's definitely not too late to have it done. I've had the flu for about 5 years running and mostly I've had it in January, so I assume I must catch it meeting people over Christmas.

However if anyone chooses not to have it done then you need to keep up good hygiene - keep washing your hands and try and avoid busy crowded places.

I'm bored. 3 more days and no work to do. Had to come in early so I could leave for the doctors at 4:30pm but noone is in to give me any work. It's all a bit pointless really isn't it? Might make a start emptying my drawers :)

I am jumping on the not told about flu jab band wagon lol.
My mum informed me of what was on the news.
Rang GP said must go through midwife. Midwifes phone was off for 2 days. Got hold of her yesterday and booked in next thursday. "if the surgery still has some stock".
It really feels like no one cares that much about it.
I'm sure this is the postcode lottery again. I was expecting the same issue and was shocked when I booked it yesterday I got the appointment for today. I have to admit my health center is excellent where I am. Where I lived before it used to be at least a week before I could get appointments.

  • Really worried now as just called surgery and the earliest flu jab appointment they can offer me is 7th Jan so over 2 weeks away. I am 37 weeks on Sat so not very helpful at all.

No-one mentioned getting this done at my appointment earlier this week. I have not been happy with the treatment I have had as each appointment is with a different midwife or consultant and info is not very forthcoming. I guess that comes with living in the city and being under a busy hospital. My sister who lives in Cornwall had a really nice dedicated midwife who she could call on at any time.

I think it is such a difficult time for all ladies particularly first time mums it would be nice to feel that there was a bit more support.

Iwcus78 - you do need to get the flu vaccine each year. Even the swine flu virus changes over the year so you won't get full protection from last year's dose.

Had given up on having the baby before Christmas but now getting quite strong regular contractions. Can't have been the curry I made for dinner- it was barely hot at all. However, not going to get too excited as this happened a couple of weeks ago and turned out to be false labour pains.

    Sleep well everyone!

I know it's calmed down overnight but - good luck! Hoping for a Christmas miracle for you!

Same here - I do have someone I'm supposed to be training but my job is so reactionary that it's really difficult - it's actually easier if I'm not here for a few days so he has to deal with the little issues himself, and then he can come to me with queries when I'm back. But yep - 5 working days including today - and I'm soooo bored.

Re Swine flu - I wasn't asked to come in and have it, midwives mentioned nothing - I just took it upon myself. Nurse at the GP was quite shocked that I hadn't been prompted.

I do urge everyone to read the story about Harvey Flanagan - even if you think you might not catch it your baby can't be immunised until s/he's 6 months old, but you can pass some of your immunity on to baby through the placenta if you have the jab.

    Stay well ladies xx

I've felt the same throughout my pregnancy, I don't really know what I was expecting but I definitely expected more than I've had - I feel slightly like I'm on a carousel of pregnant women and the midwives all seem so jaded - like they're forgotten what a magical time it actually is, and that we don't know the answers to our questions like they do.

Could you go to Boots or Tesco for the jab? I know they charge for it but it's not that much and if you really want it then it's worth the expense IMO. xx

    Morning ladies :D

Thank you all so much for thinking of me. I read some of your messages on Tuesday after my last post and I was sitting at work with this huge lump that was taking it's time to budge :o

I started to feel a wee bit better after posting and as soon as I got home from work the first thing I said to DH was that I am starting to feel down again. We had a chat and spoke about how I was feeling. It sounds silly probably but my uncles death really rocked me, much more than I expected. He was the closest brother to my dad and our favourite uncle and for it to happen so quickly was a shock. I then started to worry about my dad we are close and I know it's going to happen one day but I can't stand the thought of him not being here.

Unfortunately my imagine does tend to run a bit mad and I tend to see the worst things that can happen whereas I need to concentrate on what is happening now. Probably pregnancy hormones aren't helping and I just feel so run down at the mo.

I am supposed to be in work today but I haven't gone in which I do feel a wee bit guilty about as technically I am not that unwell but just feel I need a day of rest.

My DH has been a wee star, he put the crimbo music on got all the pressies, made hot choc with cream and marshmallows in our santa mugs and we wrapped the presents last night. I am feeling more in the mood for it now.

Anyway that's enough about that now the baby stuff!

I was doing a lot of last minute shopping yesterday then had to rush home to get DD to her chrismas concert then back out later to finish the Christmas shopping and Oh MY Goodness the pain in my bump!!! I presume it's just bubs growing and my muscles streeetttccchiiinnngg but it was so painful, like a really bad stitch. To top it off in bed last night I started to get BH's they are so uncomfortable!!

Once we get the Christmas and New Year (not that we are doing anything) out the way I want to look through our bag of baby clothes and see what's what. I am sure we have kept everything but need to check.
Oh and I am pretty sure we have picked our boys name :D just need to think about a girl but still plenty time yet.

Well that's enough from me. Thanks again ladies for caring:o

Providing you did sign it, midwife said within 4 weeks, the form says to call them if you havent received it after 4 weeks but it could take up to 6 weeks, which doesnt make much sense to me.

    Thanks. x
I'm guessing that at coming up to 38 weeks, it's a bit late now...?

Not too late - baby will get some immunity through breastmilk, and colostrum especially.

flu vaccine I don't think anyone should panic, and I'm not sure taking the advice of one m/w is a great plan either, as we have all met midwives we have confidence in and ones who seemed, well, a little less than clued up.
Doctors surgeries are probably doing it a tranche of people at a time, so that's why they may not have contacted you, and some surgeries are quicker than others, and probably have more vaccine than others.

The word was that this year's 'flu is affecting the young more than anyone, and that is a really good reason to get immunised, and to pass this on by breastfeeding if you can.

Otherwise, as has been said, good hand hygiene is really important.
