<puzzled smilie> I dont know why the subject of national service has been raised here...we are talking about the two minute Silence <puzzled smilie>

Well it would be compulsory for you to join up obv. How would you ever cope seeing as you abhor everything war? Sometimes you just have to say thank you to the people who have fought for our right to live as we do.

..and there was me thinking that the emphasis this year was on the Afghanistan War (ie nothing whatsoever to do with us continuing to live a free life in this country).......

Really? Can't see why you would think that.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

The way the Silence comes over now is that it seems like a pro War gesture to observe it - hence I personally obviously cant do so - as I abhor wars (and all the excuses used to justify them).

    I don't think its pro-war.

Its sadness & gratitude for the brave men & women who gave their lives fighting for our freedom & to protect us.

My bus was late to work on thursday and I arrived just as the 2 minute silence was ending. I don't think I said anything though (apart from thanks for somebody who held a door for me).

Last year though during the silence on remembrance sunday, we observed the silence and the shop gave out a warning that we would be, as well as a warning as it began (and all the TVs on the dept were SHOWING the service). Most people, except a group of spanish stopped and respected the silence, but one person decided to go up to my department manager and demand to be served... and then started getting angry that they weren't getting a reply... she kept ranting and raving for the full 2 minutes. Then as soon as the silence had ended, my DM gave the customer a right bollocking. Not so much for not observing the silence, but for effectively demanding that we NOT observe the silence.

I say customer, they didn't buy anything...

    It was glorious :D.

now while you think that is glorious your forgetting that a lot of people do not want to observe the silence for one thing or another and that is their right to do so.

And what gives your DM the right to give someone a bollocking over anything? now fair enough she was angry but this can all be avoided in shops if people just carry a small card that says your observing the 2 mins silence and will deal with them afterwards.

As I said, there had been an announcement before and just before the silence. People don't read signs, that's why you get people standing in front of the till on a sunday at 10:45 facing the sign saying "Tills will open at 11" and they try to complain about nobody manning the till.

What gives the person a right to have a go at my DM for observing the silence? The person KNEW it was being observed because they certainly weren't deaf.

Like I said, it wasn't about that person NOT observing the silence, it was their attempt to force us not to because they feel they're too important to wait 2 minutes.

The two minutes silence is rapidly losing its import I believe, not because of any disrespect for those who fought in the two wars but rather because the survivors of those wars are diminishing daily.

My 2 minutes silence is in respect for them, not for those who have subsequently fought in wars at the behest of politicians craving world recognition, where the aim was not the defence of Britain but rather based on financial and political agendas.

The 2 minute silence is right but lets remember what it is for, please stop church sermons about remembering the wars of the last 5 decades, these were not in the defence of the British people.
