Two Minute Silence Rant

I was at work today and we held a two minutes silence for Remembrance Day but I was shocked at the attitude of some staff, managers and customers.

The three staff on the department I work on stood together at the end of our aisles with our heads lowered between the announcements but some staff and managers just carried on even though they had all been told to take part in the silence. Customers were just carrying on doing their weekly shopping.

Really annoyed me. :mad::mad:

    They had 'been told'. I agree they could have been more respectful but isn't it up to them to either respect the silence or not?

    I don't think anyone should feel forced to participate in the silence if they don't want to.

    You cant make people participate , its not unusual for people not to participate for 2 minutes, ive seen customers talk during the 2 minutes but nothing can be done,

    That's what working in a supermarket is like I'm afraid. In July, an old woman collapsed (I don't know why as I was putting stock out at the time) at the checkout, and had to be sent to the hospital in an ambulance. Obviously, the checkout had to be closed down, so paramedics could get through. I kid you not, people behind in the queue were complaining about having to go to another checkout and queue for 2 minutes extra to staff who were trying to get to the payphone to ring 999. A lot of people tend to lose their human decency and common sense when they enter a supermarket.

    but.... you are guaranteed to get through to sky/vigin/british gas call centre in those 2 mins
  • At work today we took part in the two minute silence in the call centre. If you were on a call we were told to offer the customer to partake in the silence. If the didn't want to we just had to carry on as normal

    I took part, the lady I was serving didn't :/ - 2 minutes she was talking to me, and didn't even need a reply.

    But the official word from head office was that we do respect customers' rights not to take part, and we can quietly and respectfully continue to serve them if needs be.

    If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
