Two Minute Silence Rant

Nonsense. It might be your sabbath but to me it's just Sunday. And we can't shop for 24/7 because of the outdated Sunday trading laws which is another religious based infringement on my atheism. Remembering those who died is a totally separate issue from the decline in your religious standards and for you to imply that they are linked is very wrong.
Fine...however i do not see why we should succumb to poppy fascism.
Those who have fought and died in many wars and indeed the innocent civilians who were killed have long gone and will never return. There is no point in standing round like a tailors dummy with your head bowed in feigned reverence simply because someone has fixed a pre-ordained time and there is some kind of unspoken compulsion and even threat if you do not conform.
For this reason, i do not conform and see no reason to.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
I didn't do it this year as I just forgot. It was hectic at work yesterday, it got to 10.40am and I thought 'nearly time' and then the next time I remembered was about 3pm and I'd missed it. I feel bad because it's something I normally do.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -

It's not the many wars we are particularly remembering,it is wars where others still remember losses of friends and family, and I guess it is a form of grieving, and as Sarah said, whatever you feel, you should be mindful of the feelings of others, and partly because you are assuming it's all "feigned",but you don't know.
I think I would go for "feigned reverence" rather than irreverence (if that's the correct word) any time.I can understand you don't like the hypocrisy of some.
Your thread here evokes very strong war imagery for me btw

I was at work yesterday and we didn't observe the silence, simply because we were so busy.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £24,616.090

I was at crown court (working) everyone observed it, except those (not working) who were outside smoking and shouting at each other..... Perhaps we should send them to the trenches?NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

We observed it at work so did our customers and even the annoying JML TV was silenced, you could have heard a pin drop in our store for 2 minutes yesterday.0

It is 2 minutes per year. I thought we lived in a "tolerant" society. I really can't see how piping down for 2 minutes - even if it means nothing to you - is a big hardship.0 -
Anyone that forgot etc can take part on Sunday. You could even go along to your local parade if you want to0

I had a bottom set of lively 15 year olds for maths at 11 am but you could have heard a pin drop for the 2 minutes they stood in silence behind their chairs - but I suppose that kind of headline doesn't sell copies of the Daily Mail.pulliptears wrote: »you know I had a shock a few years ago, on my way to Dads funeral there stood your typical young teen at the side of the road. On seeing the cars come past he stopped, bowed his head and took off his hat. That small mark of respect made my day that little more bearable.
I supervised a group of our Sea Scouts at an Armistice Day service at the local cemetery. They had organised themselves to sign out of school, get changed into full No 1 uniform, walk to the cemetery in the wind & rain and stand at ease & attention for 30 minutes, knowing that they then had to walk back to school.
They did this voluntarily and in the full knowledge that they would have to catch up, during break time, on any work they had missed.
While I respect the right of everyone to have any and all opinions I was so proud of our Scouts yesterday because they showed a depth of knowledge and a level of respect that is missing in so many adults today.
After the service the young people were pleased that they had come, but then, inevitably, moaned about the cold and the work they would have to catch up on, this was done with grins and jokes. In the ensuing discussion one of them said "at least we're not in a muddy trench being shot at!" Silence fell and we all thought of our Group Scout Leader, currently serving in Afghanistan.

The problem today, is everything numptie wants two minutes silence for not very much.
For me, it is an act of remebrance, not for those who died in teh first, second, Korean, Aden, Northern Ireland.
Me, it was for the knock on my door in 1982, after a night working on an airfield in Lincolnshire, that a collagues brother had gone down on the Sir Galahad. Joke before that knock, real after that!
Oh and we have had conflict since!0
