Two Minute Silence Rant
Comments
-
Two minutes is nothing to observe. Yes, it is a matter of personal choice- I observe it, and was pleased the majority of my work did also.
I may not have known the soldiers who died in various wars, but I'm aware of their sacrifice. The UK may not be the best place at the moment, and morale is low, but it would surely have been much, much worse had there not been sacrifices.0 -
Personally I observed the silence at 11am yesterday, and do so each year when possible. There's no problem about doing it at 10am if you know you can't do it at 11; or if you are unable to or forget then taking a couple minutes of quiet reflection at a later time doesn't make you a bad person as some would seem to suggest.0

Nonsense. It might be your sabbath but to me it's just Sunday. And we can't shop for 24/7 because of the outdated Sunday trading laws which is another religious based infringement on my atheism. Remembering those who died is a totally separate issue from the decline in your religious standards and for you to imply that they are linked is very wrong.
I can! Plenty of shops open 24 hours a day seven days a week, none of that Sunday trading nonsense.0 -
Personally I don't think anyone has the right to dictate to anyone else how they should commemorate the fallen - if people choose to observe the two minute silence then that's fine, but if they prefer not to, or have their own way of doing things then that's fine as well. There are people coping with all kinds of things in their lives - perhaps they can't face the idea of dwelling on thoughts of those they have lost personally in public when the 'official' moment comes, but it doesn't mean they aren't honouring them in their own way as they see fit.
The two minute silence is supposed to unite us in appreciation of those who have given their lives for this country, not as an excuse for people to get on their high horses and condemn others.0 -
I don't think it's right for certain places to observe it,especially when people are paying to call and it may be something important,no.But that's just me.But then I don't do silences either but will buy poppies
If someone had something that may be of importance to phone in about they wouldn't do it at 11am on Armistice Day... give a bit of thought ... wait to 11.02am ... better chance of not encountering the inconvenience.0 -
I work in a shop. I wore my poppy and we did the silence today but i was in my bakery (which i work alone in) i stood silent for the 2 mins. if i were to have been on a till and the person i was serving didnt want to take part in the silence then i would have expected them to wait until i had. i would no way continue serving. i feel strongly about it and want to show my respect. too many people have no respect for anything anymore.
So you would expect a surgeon to put down scalple to observe the silence?
As humans were capable of multitasking (thinking and observing a silence does not mean you have to stand there and ignore everything else. You have also had 65 years to remember and pay respects to fallen hero's. Thes brave men fight for our freedom and fight so we can live our lives the way we do. The soldiers dont stop firing to remember their fallen family. They are constantly aware of them.
So if you really want to show your respect do it by honoring and remembering them all of the time not just 2 minutes out of the 525948 available to you every year!0 -

:rotfl:I don't think she thought for one second that there would be a 2 minute silence at the DWP and she probably thought nothing of 11am either (have to admit I didn't think of either).Guess she wouldn't have been so peeved if the message had instantly said they were observing a silence so to call back later or just have the phones engaged rather than go through the normal message they play and then say it lol.I can quite picture the look on her face actually!!!
Wonder how many people making calls yesterday, especially important ones, looked at the clock to check the exact time first....If women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
i was asleep so probably quiet! i have already observed a mins silence at a couple of football matches and probably will again on saturday!0

Yesterday at 11 I observed the silence and a colleague came into my office. I pointed at the poppy I was wearing and he waited outside then came in afterwards.
Interestingly, he is European (don't want to say the nationality as it is too identifying lol), and he says in his mother country at 11am it is the start of carnival time, and he finds it strange that here we have silence.
I do remember being glared at for not observing a silence for the Tsunami victims a few years back, but I honestly had no idea it was occuring.0 -
I always observe the 2 mins and my son does too, he goes to see his grandad, who fought in the war, at some point in the day and they do it together. Having said that I think it's a personal thing and no one should be told they have to observe the 2 mins, it should be choice.Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted
I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p
