I observed the 2 minute silence whilst waiting in the Drs surgery waiting room with alot of forces and ex forces personel. They sounded an alarm to notify us the time, the screens in the room usually showing peoples names had the words scrolling from a famous poem. It was all very quiet initially until 2 old age pensioners decided that after 30 seconds of silence they would have a discussion about piles :( Despite the looks they got from people they just continued to chat. Even the toddlers in the room were quiet although a little confused. After the silence had finished someone mentioned to these people that they had just ignored the silence one womens reply "I fought for my country and that gives me the right to speak freely when i please"

I respect the silence as do my children, however this persons comments did surprise me a little.

I work in a high school and the silence fell in the middle of break, but i would like to say how proud i was of all 800 teenagers, they stopped what they were doing and you could have heard a pin drop.

If she actually fought for her country that would make her around 80 years old......that said it doesn't surprise me, how many of us have held open doors for pensioner to observe them walk through as if it is their god given right.

5 minutes later one will just let a door slam shut in your face

I can stand the smell of urine, its just the bad manners which irritate me :rotfl:

The 2 minute silence is right but lets remember what it is for, please stop church sermons about remembering the wars of the last 5 decades, these were not in the defence of the British people.

Erm.... what about the Falklands war?

but.... you are guaranteed to get through to sky/vigin/british gas call centre in those 2 mins

You wouldn't have got through to my department - we respected the silence and did not answer the phones for the two minute silence. I did get one call at 10.59 but told the caller firmly that I would take her number and call her straight back. Which I did.

That was Maggies ego trip to protect 100 islanders and 30000 sheep, none of whom to my knowledge paid British taxes or would have dreamed of coming back here.

The fact that we are still spending hundreds of millions each year to defend this god forsaken patch of dirt in the middle of the South Atlantic while homeless people sleep on the streets and pensioners die of hypothermia is nothing less than shameful

I tihnk everyon who chose to observe the silence by ignoring what their contractual meant to do (ie at work) should be docked 2 minutes wages and given a disciplinary.

I think you should lobotomise yourself with an ice pick. But we don't always get what we want.

I guess, in your grand scheme of things, I am quite fortunate that I was being paid to put on my best uniform and be in charge of my local parade. (the equivalent of a days pay went in the RBL tin though.)

It really is beggers belief that people will moan about having to take a whole two minutes out of their petty boring lives to honour those who gave everything so future generations would have something. Even if you don't agree with it sit in the corner and let those who do, do so in peace.
It must be accepted as a principle that the rifle cannot replace the speed of the horse, the magnetism of the charge and the terror of cold steel.

I don't think it's right for certain places to observe it,especially when people are paying to call and it may be something important,no.But that's just me.But then I don't do silences either but will buy poppies

Well, she knows next time not to call when there is a 2 minute silence being held. Just in case the people she is calling are choosing to observe it and be respectful.

you know I had a shock a few years ago, on my way to Dads funeral there stood your typical young teen at the side of the road. On seeing the cars come past he stopped, bowed his head and took off his hat. That small mark of respect made my day that little more bearable.

My husband always bows his head and stops if he's walking, and he never overtakes a funeral car.

You don't have to participate in a silence to be respectful, and how many do these things just because they are told to?

I respect and honour by living the life I have and using the freedoms I have!
