Your wrong. every shop that is open in due hours has a duty to serve you. If they did not want to serve anyone during the 2 min silence then they should have closed.

No I'm not wrong, the shop has no legal obligation to serve anyone, they have the right to refuse service without giving a reason. That is a basic tenant of the law.
It must be accepted as a principle that the rifle cannot replace the speed of the horse, the magnetism of the charge and the terror of cold steel.

    quoted for truth

you could be open 24/7 and not serve a single customer if you so wished.

just like tubbs & edward in the league of gentlemen - you could deem everyone to be not local and see them off. it's clearly never going to happen, unless you're a bit of a shit and the shopkeeper doesn't like you for whatever reason, but it's certainly not in law that a shop has to serve customers.
    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)

Yes it does make sense. They can't pick and choose when to participate in wars as they have an obligation to serve their country. Do you think most Germans wanted to fight in WW2 for Hitler?

Actually they did, right up until the point they started to lose, and realised that being a volunteer wouldn't be seen as a good thing. The Japanese prisoner of war camps were run by volunteer soldiers, if we go back 100's of years British soldiers slaughtered whole towns just for the fun of it and as recently as the Boer Wars civilian populations were decimated as a result of their actions. The American history is littered with stories of military barbarity.

My point being that you don't honour someone for merely being part of an instititution. Todays soldiers are doing a difficult job in difficult circumstances, but they are, as is oft the case, doing the will of their political masters, not through honourable motives defending our shores (as in the case of WW1 and WW2) but rather because they are well paid for doing so. They are in essence legalised mercenaries deployed to enforce the governments will

Congratulate them on a job well done - Yes, Hold 2 minutes silence out of respect for them - No

But that person had a right to be served for whatever they wanted so your shop had a right to provide them with that service. Again your forgetting that not everyone obseres the silence including those who have lost loved ones in any war and more pertinantly the latest wars we are in.

No they didn't. Effectively, unless a member of staff decided not to observe the silence (and as per the announcement) browsing time finished at 11:02 that day, rather than at 11:00.

    What is "browsing time"?

Wow. I wonder how many honourable servicemen/women would turn in their graves to hear you speaking out in support of those who murdered innocent civilians in the name of tyranny.

Not many. I really wish there was a 'roll eyes' smilie sometimes :rotfl:

after the melodramatic comments so far with regard to being docked wages and disciplined for taking 2 minutes out of the working day this might actually make you want to hurt yourself....
The company I work for....very large company which everyone will be familiar with...closed all phone lines, yes ALL lines from 10:50am until 11:02, to allow us to assist the customers on the phone and leave us all free to observe the silence.
This was communicated to us that this would be happening for around a week before the date and we received reminder emails to let us know what was going to happen.
SUE THE COMPANY...12 minutes!!! holy cow...... thats almost all day.

Some people need to get over it and remember the big picture...what can you say you brought to the table for the good of the country? if you arent prepared to take action and take the risks then at least respect those who are willing to stand in our place, past, present and future.

Erm says who? You? I don't think so! So you agree the soldiers of WW1 and WW2 are honourable but seeing as some war's have not been as honourable (in your eyes) you would not hold a 2 minutes silence to hounour the ones in the war's you sgree with??????????????? Hmmm i wonder how you would feel if you went to somewhere like Erskine hospital and listened to all the horrfying stories they people can tell about being made to go to war and you cannot even grace then with 2 minutes of your year? I'm embarassed for you and your selfishness.

Time where customers are allowed in to look around, fill trolleys, etc, but they cannot be served. Common on sundays where say Tesco can only open for business for 5 hours, so they let open the shop to people at say 12.30, but only operate tills from 1-6.
I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!

    This.

It's great for clothing departments etc, but rubbish on an electrical department where people start trying to find imaginitive ways to ask a question so that it doesn't have a sales-type answer.

Or people just get cross and act as if I invented the law that means that I can't serve them, when it's really religion's fault >.>.
