Two Minute Silence Rant

  • We went to the service in our village today. The mayoresses mobile went off 30 seconds after 11am:mad: First of all, people ought to know a person in office would be attending such a service, and secondly, the mayoress really could have switched her phone off or onto silent for the service.

During the 2 minutes, there were some middle age women nudging each other, pointing and whispering. It's only two minutes, why attend a remembrance service if you don't intend on respecting the silence. My 5-year-old little girl managed it (and she is part child/part parrot I think!), she even knows what the silence is for in her own way..."It's to think about all the special men and ladies that died making a safe world for us to live in"

So you would expect a surgeon to put down scalple to observe the silence?

I am a theatre nurse, and one year I was working on remembrance Sunday, and we had an emergency case on the table. At 11am, we didn't down tools, but continued working, but the anaesthetist turned down the volume of the monitor to a tiny beep, and we didn't speak a word to each other for the two minutes. Any good theatre nurse will watch the operation carefully, and know what instrument the surgeon will require next without being asked. So there is no need for talking. At 11.02, the monitor volume was returned to normal, and our chitter chat picked up again, but we did respect the two minutes

  • Is this another aspect of Poppy fascism?

If we can erase the Sabbath, have 24/7 shopping including Sundays, have pubs open later, have off licences selling booze to youngsters until midnight, have ad hoc alcohol delivery services, practically legalise the smoking of cannabis filth in public places/transport,then we can also !!!! a snook at those who suffered and died in various wars.

It is symptomatic of the decline in morals/values in English Society.

I wear a poppy, pay a regular contribution to the British Legion, and observed the silence. This has nothing to do with faith, merely my respect and gratitude for the servicemen and women who have laid down their lives, bodies and mental well-being to protect our freedom, and for those who continue to do so.

Before you bemoan the way secularism has destroyed society, how many wars have been fought about religion? How many lives lost? Look at the world around you. Faith has cost more blood than drugs, underage drinking and Sunday trading put together.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

I can not believe there is a seven page debate going on about this.

Just goes to show what kind of a country we live in where we can not even take 2 mins out of a day to show some respect for the men and women, grandfathers, grandmothers, mums, dads, sons and daughters that fought and sadly lost there lives so future generations could go on.

For people going on about you should not be forced to do it blah blah blah if you can not spare 2 mins out of your day you have 1438 left plenty of time, then you are wrong and seriously selfish.

I am only young but have enough respect to follow the 2 mins silence and no nobody in my family that i know of fought but surely it is commen decency to show your respect to those who did.

Very sad britan we all now live in :0(

Erm says who? You? I don't think so! So you agree the soldiers of WW1 and WW2 are honourable but seeing as some war's have not been as honourable (in your eyes) you would not hold a 2 minutes silence to hounour the ones in the war's you sgree with??????????????? Hmmm i wonder how you would feel if you went to somewhere like Erskine hospital and listened to all the horrfying stories they people can tell about being made to go to war and you cannot even grace then with 2 minutes of your year? I'm embarassed for you and your selfishness.

Clearly you have only read part of the thread, as I stated earlier, I will continue to maintain 2 minutes silence for as long as survivors from World Wars 1 and 2 remain alive. Once the last of these selfless heroes has passed away I won't pay it as much attention.

I'm embarrassed by your inability to actually read and comprehend a simple thread of posts. :D

Todays soldiers are doing a difficult job in difficult circumstances, but they are, as is oft the case, doing the will of their political masters, not through honourable motives defending our shores (as in the case of WW1 and WW2) but rather because they are well paid for doing so.

Hahahaha - do you KNOW how much a young army private/airman fresh from training is on?!! It isn't the great fortune you seem to think. And certainly not enough when in some cases it's in exchange for their life.

Time where customers are allowed in to look around, fill trolleys, etc, but they cannot be served. Common on sundays where say Tesco can only open for business for 5 hours, so they let open the shop to people at say 12.30, but only operate tills from 1-6.

Thanks for the explanation, I have not encountered it before.

My local Tesco is open 7 days a week 24 hours a day so no browsing time for me - just shopping time.

I don't suppose, being that you are "young" you understand the irony of that statement in regard to this thread?

My mistake and feel free to be embarassed for me as i have compassion for those who are less fortunate than me and understand the little things make them happy :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Anyway enough of the stupid bickering i'd rather put my time to something more productive.

Do you know how much an Army Cpl Chef is on, roughly the same as a university lecturer, with the added bonus of cheap accommodation, free medical and dental treatment, subsidised food, almost free private education for his children and a multitude of other benefits.

Not bad for someone cooking sausage and chips :-)

Anyway this is now getting exceptionally boring. No way am I going to do 2 minutes silence for someone fighting for oil in Iraq, or to force democracy on the Afghanistani's - I will however happily observe the silence in respect for the fallen and survivors of the world wars.
