so does this effectivly mean whenever you do collection only you are not covered by anything?
i have had people collect and pay by cash, or pay by paypal (annoyingly as it costs me more!) but also i have collected and given cash or paid paypal without issues.

I do still sell some collection only items but I accept the risk I take if buyer pays by paypal. For high end goods or those in the most scammed areas (and that includes baby equipment) I would sell elsewhere.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Well in the end I contacted the buyer and explained that I'm not a trader, just someone who sometimes sells their own 2nd hand items on E-Bay and that when I posted the auction I had no idea that there might be any issue with Pay Pal and buyer Collects, but that later I had found out that when collected in Person, Seller protection does not apply. I appreciated that they wanted buyer protection and that was understandable, but it had come as a surprise to me that I was left with no seller protection - Would they be prepared to cancel the transaction? I would be willing to send it by Courrier service but as they had already told me clearly they wanted to see it working this might not be acceptable to them.
Although clearly not best pleased they did agree that we should cancel the auction by mutual agreement.
I feel a bit of an !!!! over this, but I live and I learn. As I expected, I've had no reply from E-Bay about this particular loophole.
They must surely be familiar with it, they have help pages on making your auction buyer to collect. The only reason I became aware of any issue on this is through forums like this one. Yes I could read all the e-bay pages and figure it all out in advance but I bet not a lot of people do that. Most of the time I'm selling a CD, or a rug or something where I just accept that it happens and take a loss if I get it wrong - Needless to say, I wont be selling any more TVs Buyer to Collect in future - I;ll stick to the free ads
Thanks for all the info and replies0 -
Do not, under any circumstance, allow somebody who is picking up an item to pay by paypal.
I sold a TV on ebay to a user with very good feedback, they paid via paypal and the guy picked up the tv. A few days later the transaction was reversed from my paypal account for fraud - the true ebay users account and paypal had been hacked or phished, meaning the person who took the tv was somebody completely different.
As I had no proof of purchase I got jack back, paypal just said "too bad" pretty much and I was out £500.
Whilst you do have to accept paypal, you do not have to let them collect. I would have the courier charge as compulsory for the paypal payment, and say that if they want to collect it has to be cash. You're perfectly within your rights to do this.
Like a previous poster said, if they pay via paypal then ship it to them, even if it's somebody down the street (assuming you don't know them).0 -

That's pretty much what I've done when selling largish items (not that I've sold many)
I quote a price for courier delivery and payment by PayPal or other methods and then offer in the description the option for collection or local delivery for cash.
If the buyer wishes to pay via PayPal they then have to accept courier delivery and the ensuing costs.0 -
When ebay buyers want to use PayPal for Collection-0nly items we notify them of our requirements, namely: "When paying by PayPal for collection-only items, for our mutual protection, please remember to bring current photo ID (Driving Licence, Passport, Firearms Certificate, etc.) and a recent utility bill with your name and address. We may also require a copy of your fingerprints* for our sales records. Thank you for your understanding." We make a copy of their photo ID, making sure that the photo is of the person providing it.
Of course we are always happy to courier the item to them at their expense.
If they still want to go ahead with PayPal for Collection-0nly items, make sure you note the buyer's car licence plate, and confirm registration number with Tax sticker on windshield.
* Fingerprints are helpful to Police in establishing their real identity when fake photo ID is used by identity thieves.
Hope this helps!"Money is truthful. If a person speaks of their honour, make sure they pay in cash."0 -

Actually I do not believe it is helpful as I am not prepared to lose money chasing people through small claims, nor am I prepared to put statements that make me look foolish in my auctions.
So, I'm your buyer, I buy your items and pay by paypal and then refuse (as is my right to provide ID as you are not an official body) then what? You refund my money and lose your FVFs..so all that you've done is cost yourself money and end up with a neg.
The only way that would work is to make it a lot simpler and do as was suggested on one of the ebay forums. DO NOT list as collection only but say in body of the auction that collection is possible by prior agreement. Then if someone does want to collect you can insist on cash as if they refuse your auction is set up to show a courier charge, so you issue an invoice showing the whole lot with postage. Much simpler and none of the silly fingerprinting nonsense.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Blimey charlie, there are some interesting people out there aren't there?!
Buyer paying by paypal and collecting smacks of one thing only to me, wants to pay by credit card for an expensive purchase (assuming it's over £100).
I pretty much pay for everything on ebay now with a credit card, if I sell and have cash in the account then it's instantly swept into the bank account.
I have had a large sale go through for a few hundred quid and as soon as the money was transferred I removed the account from my line up.Sealed pot challange no: 3390 -

I do hope this is a poor attempt at Sarcasm. If not you must look like a right muppet0 -
