This is the reason I no longer sell on ebay. You HAVE to accept paypal. The only thing I'd suggest is be open with the buyer and due to the common paypal on collection then INR scam, if they need to pay paypal then you need to have it shipped by a trackable method...even if they live round the corner!

Prehaps offer them a discount for cash, or ofer to go halves on postage costs. You risk the wrath of ebay, but better than losing your item AND money.

I've sent them an e-mail pointing out as diplomatically as I could that as they'll collect the goods in person then Paypal wont offer them any extra protection, but as a seller I lay myself open to a INR claim as I would be unable to satisfy E-Bays rules of proof of delivery.
I've suggest a mutual cancelling of the auction.

They could refuse a mutual which leaves you stuck with your ebay fees.

Not all people wanting to use paypal on collection are scammers, he might just be using a zero interest credit card to fund his purchase or something normal like that. However I agree that the risks of not only an INR complaint, but also a fraudulent use of a card claim would make me very nervous.

Yes they could, in which case I'd go ahead with the transaction in the hope that their feedback was true and if they rob me, they rob me. I won't die from starvation just feel sick. Maybe this E-Bay malarky has had its day - it seems very one sided now

I think ebay i still going strong, in fact their profits are up and they are opening more and more new accounts all the time.

It isn't really one sided, you just have to know what you are doing. Personally I do not sell high end goods that I cannot find a way of posting. I do list collection only on some smaller items but on the understanding that I can afford to lose the money if it goes wrong.

None of this is new, the rules about paypal changed a couple of years ago so most of us have either changed our selling patterns or adjusted what we sell to stay safe.

Thats fair enough Soolin but I'm not a trader, I just sell my own possessions on E-Bay from time to time. My fault for not delving deep into the rules and visiting this particular forum more often.
I was just looking for a straightforward way of selling my TV without having callers come round looking - I'm afraid Mrs Jim just cant cope with that.
So its really a case with me that I never usually have anything worth more than a few tens at most.

So if it was listed as pick-up only, what did you expect people to do other than call round?

If you mention that you think they are going to do an INR on you, then you are just asking for trouble. Perhaps put it slightly more diplomatically if you must ask them if they wouldn't prefer paying by cash.

Could you not say 'thats fine, as long as you mention in the notes in paypal that you are happy with the item and that you have collected it in person' or something of that ilk, to cover yourself.

That wouldn't count at all. Paypal and eBay don't tend to read comments, they only go with things they can prove independently, such as tracking numbers. Comments written by either buyer or seller could have been done under duress or be that person's side of the story.

It's unfortunate that so many people are wise to this kind of scam and make it difficult for people who genuinely do want to pay electronically. It makes me less likely to buy expensive things on collection because of the issues involved, ditto selling. Since I'm not posting this on an eBay-owned forum, I can advise people wanting to sell C-O-C items to do it on other sites such as Gumtree or through their local papers/shop windows. It's too late if you've already done it through eBay and aren't aware of their procedures.

I think most fair minded people might disagree with you on this. Ebay own paypal. Ebay force you to accept paypal. Paypal require proof of delivery. Hence you are forced to stop selling high value items which cannot be posted easily or take all the risk.
This is patently unfair. Ebay takes a slice of the transaction, but none of the risk. This is a loophole ebay have done nothing about.
    It's totally one sided.
