  • I'm guessing HMRC will be very busy after last months MSE newsletter...

I checked my code and I am on the right one :( Checked my wife's though and she has been on 489 for the last 6 or 7 years we think... looks like she should get back £1000+ if I have worked it out correctly. :):):)

Check the number of years you are allowed to go back - you might have a nasty surprise.

Why was your wife on a 489L tax code - what does her P2 coding notice say?

All the tax code checker will tell you is that the 498L tax code is different to the normal tax code - what it won't say is why and there might be a genuine reason.

I'm not sure why my wife was on that tax code, why would I know?

And I know the tax code checker doesn't tell me why she was on that tax code, which is why I got her to ring HMRC who confirmed my thoughts that it was wrong and she should be on 747L

I'm not sure what you are getting at with your post :o

The excuse that they gave was that they didn't have her current address, they still had her parents address from when she lived there. How they knew this since they have never written to her at her old address (or her parents would have passed any mail on) or why they didn't contact her to let her know, I have no idea.....

£1000+ tax rebate is far from a nasty surprise......

The more years we look back, the closer to being correct her tax code is, so the less and less rebate comes from further back... if that makes sense.

The vast majority of the rebate comes from 10/11, then 9/10, then 8/9 etc..... only £25 of my calculated amount comes from 7/8 and even less from 6/7.... you get the picture.

Looking at the link you posted she can claim back to 05/06 anyway so its not a problem. Good link thought cheers.

All I was trying to say was not to get your hopes up too much before speaking to HMRC as there might be a genuine reason that your wife was on a lower tax code. That was why I suggested you/she check the P2 coding notice before phoning.

Lower tax codes usually originate from something like a medical benefit or company car - sometimes when people change jobs these are the bits that get confused.

    Ok, thanks.

We knew she didn't have any benefits in her job that would mean her allowance was reduced.

Anyway like I said she spoke to HMRC and they confirmed she is on the wrong code.

    Thanks

  • Afternoon everyone. My wife got her letter and first cheque from the Inland Revenue today - my calculations were badly wrong above :(

The good news is they were a lot less than they should have been WOOHOO - she is getting over £2000 back...

Thankyou MSE, following your recent news letter I discovered that I have been on tax code "BR" since 2006-7. I got my check yesterday for £6565 and there is more to come in my wages this month. All in approx £7200. What a result, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.
Martin I owe you a pint, or two or three..............
On top of this I have found that my daughters boyfriend is also owed tax, albeit, not quite as substantial. On to my next mission.
