Tax rebate SUCCESSES

Hi MSE's
I contacted the Tax Office on 18th Feb 2011 as my tax code was very wrong (and found out that it has been since 2003!!). They have since updated my tax code for this year 2010/2011, but they wrote to me asking me to prove that I do not receive Incapacity Benefit (which is why my tax code is wrong). I contacted the DWP who were very helpful and sent a letter confirming this. I sent this to the Tax Office (Cardiff, Ty Glas) who received it on 29th March 2011, but as of today (19th April), they have not opened the post for that day and do not intend to do so until 29th April.
I'm not happy with the service received and spoke to a manager who said there was nothing they would do, and even got put through to a complaints department who took the details of the issue and would pass it back, but also said they could/would do nothing to escalate my case.
Does anyone out know how to escalate a case or is this the norm for the tax office?
Regards

I checked my tax code in January and found that my code had been less than it should have been for the last 6 years.
I wrote to HMRC and a couple of weeks later got a letter saying I had paid the right tax and in fact owed them a very small amount.
As I have always been PAYE this didn't make any sense but I did get a different letter saying that my tax code for the year 2010-11 had been changed to the normal personal allowance. In order to clarify matters I faxed back and asked why my tax code had now changed and why it had been lower in the first place.
I didn't get a reply so chased this up with a hard copy of my letter and a few weeks later got a reply from a different office saying that my tax code was lower to take into account my revenue from savings etc. I do remember completing a tax return in 2002 (ish) and as we were saving for a house move we had a significant amount of savings then but they obviously disappeared when we moved in 2005. HMRC had obviously assumed that I still had this extra income.
I wrote back saying that my savings income was negligible and had been for several years. I gave them the exact amount of interest that I had earned over the last year as an example.
Again I heard nothing for a few weeks and then yesterday I got a standard letter with a cheque attached for £948.79 !! This letter says that there is a separate letter with exact calculations but I haven't received this yet. The letter with the cheque also states that the refund relates to the tax year 2009-10 whereas I queried 2004-2011.
I will wait for the calculations letter to see what this says but I imagine that this is the refund for all 6 years and they have just lumped it on one cheque. I'll keep you posted!
The moral of the story is if you think there is a mistake keep persisting until you get a refund or an explanation that you are satisfied with (Not a very catchy moral I know)
**Update 22.04.11** - I have received the tax calculations letters and there are still a couple of discrepancies (no apparent recalculation for 2010-11 despite my tax code being 594L for 10 months out of 12 and no calculation for tax year 2004-5 despite the fact that my letter was received and replied to before the cut off date of 31.01.11.) I have written another letter and will add another post if things change.July 2018 - Now Mortgage Free0 -
Hi,
Having seen the article on your email/website I completed the tax code checker and found that my tax code was incorrect. It really was as simple as that - the following day I contacted HMRC who said they could see what had happened as it looks as though my tax code from my previous employer had been carried over to this new employer - with my new employer I was taxed at source so should have been on the maximum tax. I decided to follow this up with a letter to the HMRC. My tax code had been incorrect for 6 years!!! 3 weeks after the phone call to the HMRC I received a cheque for £5025 - I'm still waiting to receive a cheque for last years tax and they haven't said whether they will pay me for the incorrect tax that is more than 5 years old yet.
A BIG thank you to Money Saving Expert - :rotfl:I'm over the moon!! It may have been money that was mine in the first place but who knows I may have never realised until it was too late! Not only did I get a big cheque from the HMRC but I now get another £100 in my pay check each month to boot!0 -
I am due to leave the UK for good on 14 May. Will I be entitled to a tax rebate for the year 2011/12? I will start work in another EU country straight away.
ThanksChallenges:

I don't understand how the calculator knows if you have underpaid or overpaid tax?
Surely it must want to know how much you got paid and how much tax you paid before it can tell you if you have overpaid or underpaid?...it just asks you your tax code and gross pay?0 -
Hi i want to thank you because of your tax checker im due to get over £1000 :j0

One happy customer here- thank you Martin and Co. I received a letter this evening to say that under A19 they were writing off my tax. Total of £938.60.
I also (due to this site) realised I could claim back the difference between what my company pays me and the 40p rate for mileage. Therefore I just received a cheque BACK for £85.05.
This all took just one simple letter.
So this site has just saved me £1023.65 :money::j0 -
Hi MSE
Thanks to your email about checking your tax, I did so and found I've overpaid last year and also currently on the wrong tax code too.
I got a cheque for £665 this morning!
thanks!

I'm due £550 back from 10-11. I sent in my P60 on 16th May.
How long are they currently taking to turn things around? I wouldn't expect they've even opened my letter yet but does anyone have a rough idea of how long it should take?0
